Genshin Impact: 12 Useful Tips for Beginners
Choose your characters wisely
Everyone starts with the same free characters, including the Main Character (also known as Traveler), Amber, Kaeya, and Lisa. It’s always a great idea to give each character a test run to see who you like. Do not feel forced to use one of the free characters, especially if you plan to spend money and roll for more. Contrary to all the tier lists you can find around the internet, the truth is that every hero can be viable in Genshin Impact.
There are over twenty characters in the game, with more being introduced in every major update. To have the most fun, we recommend focusing on building the characters that you enjoy playing most. There is one caveat, which is to make sure you have a mix of elements. We’ll go over that more in the Elemental Reactions section.
As a general rule of thumb, we recommend building only two to three characters while you level up to Adventure Rank 40. The reason is simple: you will run out of resources and spread yourself too thin by focusing on gearing out and leveling too many characters. When it comes time for Spiral Abyss, you will need one geared healer in your party. Keep that in mind to future-proof your account. Before you decide who you want in your group, it’s good to understand the gacha system and how to get new characters.
Understand Wishes and Gacha
Using Genshin Impact’s gacha system requires an in-game currency known as Wishes. You will get twenty free wishes early in the game, including ten at Adventure Rank 5 and ten at Adventure Rank 10. After reaching level five, you can open up your Wish screen by pressing F3 on PC, clicking the star on mobile, or clicking the star icon from the pause menu on PlayStation 4.
On the Wish screen, you will see some different screens known as banners. There is always a standard banner, which has an equal chance to drop any hero or weapon. Then, there are two other unique banners: one for a specific hero and one for weapons. These banners rotate every couple of weeks and have a higher chance of dropping a particular hero or weapon. For your first ten wishes, pulling the Beginners’ Wish will guarantee you a Noelle, one of four current healers in Genshin Impact.
Learn the Elemental Reactions
An essential part of combat in Genshin Impact is Elemental Reactions. Every character has a vision or element, which can be either: Anemo, Cryo, Hydro, Electro, Geo, Pyro, and soon to be Dendro. The main character can switch between Anemo and Geo by visiting the Statue of the Seven. All elements interact with each other somehow, with Anemo and Geo being neutral to all others. Refer to the fanmade Elemental Resonance Chart below to better understand how this all works.
Read your Adventurer’s Handbook
One of the most important tools in the game is your Adventurer’s Handbook. You will receive this early on in the game, and it will show up as a Handbook button on the screen’s top right. Pay attention to the Experience tab, and follow all of the tasks to ensure you are leveling everything correctly. The game does a great job of forcing you to do tasks to avoid falling behind in the game.
You can also use the Adventurer’s Handbook to locate Bosses and see which materials they drop. While this may not be super useful in the lower Adventure Ranks, it comes in handy as you level up and need materials. Remember to complete tasks in the handbook because it’s almost as crucial as finishing the main quests.
Complete the quests
Now that you understand the basics of Genshin Impact, it’s time to start leveling. The best and most basic way to increase your Adventure Rank is by following the quests. Always pull up your Journal for a list of active quests if you don’t know what to do next. Your quests will last well into Adventure Rank 30, and there’s always World Quests that you can find by exploring Teyvat.
Completing the main story quests will grant you the most Adventure Rank experience out of anything else in the game. We also have a guide detailing all of the best methods to gain Adventure Rank in Genshin Impact. One of those methods leads us to our next topic of Resin.
Use your Resin
If you pull up your map, you will notice something known as Resin on the top right corner. Resin is essentially your fuel in Genshin Impact. You use Resin to complete Domains, World Bosses, and Ley Lines, all of which are important for leveling, finding gear, and farming resources. Your Resin slowly regenerates to a max of 120 per day. However, you can spend Primogems, an in-game currency, to refresh your Resin up to six times per day. Each refresh gives you 60 more Resin and will cost more Primogems for each subsequent refresh, with the sixth refresh costing 200 Primogems.
You will want to spend ALL of your Resin and refreshes every day if you are the type of player who loves to play as efficiently as possible. Unfortunately, this will likely cost you money at some point because you will run out of Primogems. That’s one of the ways Genshin Impact monetizes their game. It’s important to note that you can still have loads of fun in Genshin Impact and be successful without spending a dime. The benefit of buying Primogems boils down to being able to level quicker. So, how should you spend your Resin?
Complete Ley Lines
Before Adventure Rank 30, the absolute best way to spend your Resin is by completing Ley Lines. There are two types of Ley Lines: Blossom of Wealth and Blossom of Revelation. These show up as portals on your map, and you can click on them to activate navigation. Blossom of Revelations reward you with character experience material to level up your characters. Blossom of Wealth rewards you with Mora, a virtual currency in Genshin Impact. Each Ley Line run costs you 20 Resin, and you should run these as much as possible to stockpile materials for later.
Genshin Impact does a great job of making you feel rich when you’re low level. You will open your inventory and see hundreds of character experience books, weapon experience, and Mora. As you level, you’ll quickly notice your resources dwindling until you finally reach Adventure Rank 40 and realize you should have been saving your resources.
Every task you complete using Resin grants you Adventure Rank experience. The basic formula is 20 Resin translates to 100 Adventure Rank experience. You will also come across an item known as Fragile Resin, which restores 60 Resin on use. Some players like to save this for Adventure Rank 40, but others prefer to spend it as soon as possible to speed up the leveling process. The choice is up to you.
Obtain Mora
Now that you’re familiar with a few of the basics and how Resin works, it’s time to talk about Mora, Genshin Impact’s version of Gold. Mora is a requirement for leveling your characters, weapons, and artifacts. Luckily, you can easily make 40,000 Mora for every Blossom of Wealth run, but your Resin is limited. Refer to our guide on making Mora in Genshin Impact for some additional methods you can follow to make stacks on stacks.
Leveling and ascending your characters
Leveling your characters is crucial because it increases your health and base stats. As your Adventure Rank increases, so does your World Rank, making monsters in the world more difficult. To scale with the content, you’ll need to make sure at least two of your characters are on par and leveling regularly. The maximum level is 90, and you must “ascend” your characters at level 20, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90. Ascension requires particular materials that you can collect from mobs, world bosses, and questing.
Open your Character screen and select the hero you want to level. On the bottom right, you should see a button that says either level up or ascend. You can spend Wanderer’s Advise, Adventurer’s Experience, and Hero’s Wit to level your characters. You can obtain these items from quests, chests, battle pass leveling, Adventure Rank leveling, and Blossom of Revelations. Each character requires specific leveling and ascension materials, so keep that in mind when it comes to farming.
Earlier in our Genshin Impact beginner’s guide, we mentioned focusing on two characters to start. Hopefully, you made up your mind on two characters. As you approach higher Adventure Ranks, you probably have some basic Artifacts and a decent weapon. Let’s talk about gearing your characters.
Gearing your characters
When people talk about character builds in Genshin Impact, they are mainly talking about weapons and artifacts. Artifacts all belong to specific sets, which offer unique two-piece and four-piece bonuses. Some set bonuses are better on some heroes than others. It all depends on what stats your character needs to deal more damage or heal more efficiently. From Adventure Rank 20 to 40, we recommend throwing Berserker’s Set on your main damage dealers. It’s an easy set to acquire and does the job well. Do not worry about farming Domains until Adventure Rank 40, because that’s when you can finally get five-star Artifacts to drop.
We have guides for many characters, including Barbara, Beidou, Bennett, Diluc, Fischl, Jean, Klee, Qiqi, Razor, Sucrose, and Venti. Refer to those if you want a better look at how to gear out specific heroes. As a general rule of thumb, check which stats you need for your character and equip the proper set bonuses. Make sure the main stat on the Artifact is ATK% or CRIT% for damage dealers. For healers, you will either want HP% on Barbara, DEF on Noelle, or ATK%/ATK on Qiqi and Jean.
Max out the Artifacts with good rolls so that your two or three main characters have good gear sets. As you run Spiral Abyss, you will need to build two full parties, meaning you can pass this gear down to your other characters as you find better Artifacts.
Complete Daily Commissions
Finally, make sure to do your Daily Commissions every day for Primogems and Adventure Rank experience. These tasks are generally straightforward and only take a few minutes to complete. You receive four Daily Commissions each day and head to the Adventurer’s Guild to claim your rewards. Commissions are another great way to earn some free resources, so take advantage of them if you want to maximize your efficiency.
Have fun
Perhaps the most important and useful tip for Genshin Impact beginners is to have fun. It may sound cliche, but don’t let anyone tell you how to play the game. Ignore tier lists and play the characters you want to play at your own pace. Our twelve useful tips for Genshin Impact beginners hopefully give you a foundation for understanding the game. Go out there and have fun exploring the world of Teyvat!
