Why You Should Play Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis

It's Time to Fight Safer Sephiroth as Cait Sith!

Square-Enix has been busy. In addition to the incoming release of Final Fantasy XVI, fans of Final Fantasy VII are eating good. Sure; it’s been a couple of years since Final Fantasy VII: Remake dropped, and the mobile-exclusive Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier is meeting an untimely end.

But, we recently saw the release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion. And, we know that Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth is launching this upcoming winter. In addition, yet another mobile experience, Ever Crisis will be launching in beta this Summer. But, what is Ever Crisis? And, why should anyone play it?

Why You Should Play Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis

Square-Enix is marketing Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis as “Another Possibility for a Remake.” This is because Final Fantasy VII: Remake … wasn’t a remake. In fact, it’s more akin to a sequel than a remake for reasons I won’t delve into here. So, Ever Crisis is meant to do two very important things for fans: give them a true remake in a style they’re familiar with, while also further exploring the Final Fantasy VII multiverse.

In the trailer for Ever Crisis, it’s clear that we’ll be able to play key events from Crisis Core as well as the original Final Fantasy VII. In fact, they’ve confirmed that this mobile game will cover events from the entire timeline, including from Before Crisis, Dirge of Cerberus, and Advent Children. So, in a way, this is the remake that fans have been asking for for decades.

But, at the same time, it’s clear that Ever Crisis won’t shy away from playing with expectations. For example, the most recent trailer opens with some unknown (to me) characters. This either means they are from the previously unreleased Before Crisis, or they’re wholly original. Also, the trailer ends with an all-too-familiar shot of what could be a young Sephiroth, but who could also be an evil version of Cloud.

Why Does Any of This Matter?

So, what can we expect from Ever Crisis, given this information? Well, we can say that it’s going to be an iOS/Android exclusive, meaning there’s probably going to be some kind of gacha element introduced. I say that because the trailer also showcases alternative characters and costumes. For example, there’s a shot of Aerith not only fighting in a Mako reactor, but wearing an elaborate gown. It goes without saying, but both of those things do not occur in the original game.

It’d seem that while Ever Crisis will allow players to re-experience the story as it originally happened, it’ll also allow them to remix it to their whim. It would make sense if we can play as Vincent Valentine whilst fighting against Reno/Rude atop Sector 7’s plate, or fight Safer Sephiroth with Aerith in our party. In any case, Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis is looking to be a promising addition to the series. Now, if only they’d add it to more than just iOS/Android. Then, we’d be cooking with mako energy, so to speak.
