It has been a while since the Final Fantasy series began. In fact, it’s been more than 35 years since Hironobu Sakaguchi let us embark on the ultimate adventure. When Final Fantasy was released for the Famicom, or, as it’s known in the West, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), the company now known as Square-Enix was simply known as Square. In the time since the series has seen over seventy different releases.
I … I don’t think I have been this shocked since I found out there are over twenty games in the Kingdom Hearts series, and … considering they’re also by Square-Enix, I think we’re seeing a trend play out here.
In any case, while the main series may imply to some that they need to be played in a specific order, very few of them play off of each other. So, those new to the series could theoretically play Final Fantasy VII, then Final Fantasy XIII, then the original Final Fantasy without (much) confusion. It’s also the perfect time to recount the journey to date because Final Fantasy XVI got released on June 22, 2023!
