I remember playing Pokémon Gold and bumming around Johto Route 36, cutting down all the little trees that I encountered. I didn’t really need to, but it just felt kinda nice to smash things. Except for the one instance where the tree smashed back. That was the first time I encountered a Sudowoodo, though even though I caught it, I didn’t actually realize until later it wasn’t a Grass type. With the Johto Collection Challenge underway in Pokémon GO, now’s a good time to relive that childhood memory, preferably without being smacked upside the head. Here’s how to catch Sudowoodo in Pokémon GO.
Much like the recently concluded Hoenn Collection Challenge, the Johto Collection Challenge requires you to catch nine generation 2 Pokémon native to the Johto region. These Pokémon are as follows:
- Chikorita
- Cyndaquil
- Totodile
- Sudowoodo
- Sunkern
- Murkrow
- Smeargle
- Miltank
- Larvitar
As was the case with the Hoenn challenge, most of these Pokémon can be found wandering around in the wild, and since their spawn rates are boosted for the duration of the event, you’ll probably be seeing quite a bit of them for a while. However, much like Plusle and Minun in the Hoenn challenge, the Johto challenge has an outlier to the wild-roamers: Sudowoodo.
How to Catch Sudowoodo in Pokémon GO
Just like Plusle and Minun, Sudowoodo won’t appear in the wild until you complete a specific Field Research task obtained from a local PokeStop. This time, the task you’ll need to complete is ‘Catch 5 Grass-type Pokémon.’ Any five are fine, even if you already have them, but they have to be Grass types. Though, before that, you’ll need to actually get the task from a PokeStop by spinning it. Same deal as before, just keep on spinning them, dumping any irrelevant tasks you get, until you get the right one.
Once you’ve successfully cleared your Grass-type hunt, Sudowoodo will immediately appear in the wild, ready for encounter. Don’t worry, it won’t run away, so just keep lobbing Poké Balls at it until it gets the picture.
