Crisis Core Reunion: How to Get 100% In the Shelling Minigame

DANG IT! I MISSED JUST ONE! JUST ONE!

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion’s second chapter has Zack visiting Banora Village, where his mentor, Angeal, grew up. But, he’s quickly wrapped up in a conspiracy involving not just Angeal, but SOLIDER 1st Class Genesis.

After escaping from the enemy’s warehouse, the player will be thrown into a minigame that has them cutting down artillery shells before they can explode. It’s reminiscent of rhythm games, just … without the rhythm, and with artillery shells instead of music notes. To make a stressful situation more so, this minigame is tied to a missable achievement that, if you want to unlock, you’ll have to make no mistakes.

How to Get 100% in the Shelling Minigame

OK, so first and foremost, it should be said that there are ten shells you’ll have to cut down in total. If you cut them down too soon or too late, they’ll explode and won’t count. You’ll have to cut all of them down if you’d like to nab that achievement. If you’re not interested in that, you theoretically don’t need to cut any of them down. In addition to the achievement, however, cutting them all down will net you a bonus amount of gil.

In any case, the secret to this minigame lies in the timing. You will probably be tempted to undershoot it if you’re anything like me. But, it’s important to keep your ears open but most importantly keep your eyes open. As soon as the shell makes a sound and changes color, that’s your cue to swing your sword.

This minigame has this annoying quirk where it changes the camera angle at the most inopportune times. It’s somewhat bearable for the first half, but in the second half, this quirk is amped up. It’s especially bad when it comes to the final shell, because the camera angle makes it very difficult to use the same tactics as before. But, the timing remains the same, so don’t let the drastic change trip you up.

If all goes well, the achievement will pop once you’ve cut all ten shells, and you’ll be thrown into the other minigame in this chapter. Keep in mind: if you mess up on the shelling minigame, close your game and re-load the auto-save. If you do, it’ll start you just outside of the enemy’s warehouse. It can be annoying having to start from here multiple times, but it’s better than missing out on the achievement!
