Ackley Barnes is a shifty-looking character hanging around the Three Broomsticks after you complete ‘The Helm of Urtkot’ main quest. He offers the player the ‘Venemous Revenge’ side quest, by enlisting your help with some grand larceny.

It’s rare that Hogwarts Legacy offers you a chance to directly be a criminal like this, so it may have caught you off guard. You would be right to be cautious when it comes to helping him, but what if you do?

Well, nothing. If you decide not to help Ackley Barnes, you don’t get the ‘Venemous Revenge’ side quest and both of you go about your lives. There’s nothing else to discuss.

If you do decide to help him, you’ll steal a giant Venemous Tentacula from a man named Alfred Lawley. Alfred was an old business partner of Ackley, old being the keyword.

After you steal the Tentacula and return to Ackley, you’ll have the option of handing it over or asking for a reward. If you don’t ask for a reward, you’ll be given 300 Galleons. If you do, he’ll give you 500, instead.

In terms of consequences for helping him – there are none. It doesn’t affect anything in-game, and no characters acknowledge it except for an extra bit of dialogue from Sirona in the Three Broomsticks.

The ‘Venemous Revenge’ quest is fairly easy. After agreeing to help Ackely Barnes, you’ll be sent to a location called ‘Lawley’s Cellar’. This is a separate load zone in Hogsmeade, and you can access it just around the corner from Zonkos.

The cellar is quite small and consists of one stealth and one combat section. At first, you’ll need to sneak around Lawley, who’s currently patrolling the area. Cast Disillusionment, wait for him to turn his back, and sneak behind him. You’ll be able to crawl under a small hole in the wall before moving on to the combat section.

Once you’re in the main area of the cellar, a bunch of spiders will spawn. These aren’t particularly difficult to kill, but it is a fight you’ll want to be ready for. Once dispatching them, collect the Venemous Tentacula, leave the cellar the same way you came in, and return to Ackley Barnes.

You can give him the Tentacula straight away, for which he will give you 300 Galleons, or you can ask for payment first, for which he’ll give you 500, instead.

Aside from how much you get paid, there’s no difference between both options, just like there are no consequences for choosing to help Ackley in the first place.
