Fittingly for a Pokemon inspired by the real-life blue whale, Wailord is the largest non-legendary Pokemon ever identified in any of the Pokemon world’s regions. It has an average height of 47 feet and an average weight of 877.4 pounds. Much like real blue whales, Wailords are generally docile and passive by nature, but are more than capable of using their prodigious size to defend themselves and their territory should the need arise. That need definitely does arise when Wailord is heading up Raids, so to ensure you don’t get squished, here are Wailord’s weaknesses and Raid counters in Pokemon GO.
Wailord Resistances and Weaknesses
Wailord is a pure Water type, nice and simple. That means its resistances break down like this:
- Resistant to: Steel, Fire, Water, Ice
- Weak against: Grass, Electric
Despite what its massive size may imply, Wailord’s stats aren’t actually that impressive for the most part, with a base attack of 175 and a base defense of only 87. It does, however, have a lot of staying power, with a base stamina of 347, so even if its moves aren’t individually that strong, it can fire off a lot of them in rapid succession.
Wailord Moves
These are the moves available in Wailord’s kit in Pokemon GO:
Quick Moves
- Water Gun (Water)
- Zen Headbutt (Psychic)
Main Moves
- Hyper Beam (Normal)
- Blizzard (Ice)
- Surf (Water)
Wailord Counters
Being a pure Water type doesn’t really work to Wailord’s advantage, as Water’s most critical weakness, Electric, is only generally weak to Ground moves, which Wailord doesn’t have any of. Ergo, the best course of action is to employ an Electric type with a solid defense that can endure Wailord’s high frequency of attacks.
List of Wailord Counters
- Zekrom – Charge Beam/Wild Charge
- Therian Thundurus – Volt Switch/Thunderbolt
- Magnezone – Spark/Wild Charge
- Zarude – Vine Whip/Power Whip
- Raikou – Thunder Shock/Wild Charge
- Electivire – Thunder Shock/Wild Charge
- Roserade – Razor Leaf/Grass Knot
- Mewtwo – Confusion/Thunderbolt
- Celebi – Magical Leaf/Leaf Storm
For a good balance of offense and defense with Electric typing, Magnezone is your guy. Magnezone has fairly average defense and above-average attack, but they’re both far higher than Wailord’s, so with the type superiority angle, not to mention the resistance to Normal, Ice, and Psychic moves from its partial Steel typing, Magnezone has all the spark you need to put Wailord in its place. Alternatively, you could opt for a simpler pure Electric type like Electivire or Luxray, who both have attack stats roughly similar to Magnezone’s. Their defenses aren’t quite as high, and their pure typing costs them some resistances, but you should still pull through fine if you can land a few decisive Electric attacks.
If you’re in a snippy mood and want to try a Legendary, Therian Thundurus and Zekrom both have enough muscle to make short work of a Wailord. The only thing you might want to be careful of is that both of them are weak to Ice moves, which could be a bit of a concern if Wailord decides to employ Blizzard.
