Tyranitar Resistances and Weaknesses

Tyranitar is a Rock/Dark type Pokemon, which means its resistances break down like this:

  • Resistant to: Normal, Flying, Poison, Ghost, Fire, Dark
  • Double-resistant to: Psychic
  • Weak against: Ground, Bug, Steel, Water, Grass, Fairy
  • Double-weak against: Fighting

Tyranitar Moves

These are the moves that Tyranitar has available in its kit in Pokemon GO:

Quick Moves

  • Bite (Dark)
  • Iron Tail (Steel)

Main Moves

  • Stone Edge (Rock)
  • Fire Blast (Fire)
  • Crunch (Dark)

Tyranitar Counters

Tyranitar has extremely high base stats, with its Attack, Defense, and Stamina all well over 200. That, combined with its resistances to high damage-dealing types like Psychic, make challenging one in a Raid a bit of an intimidating prospect. However, Tyranitars have one critical weakness: Fighting types. Its dual Rock/Dark typing makes it double-weak to Fighting moves, and while it may not be to the same extent as Psychic types, Fighting types are no slouches in the DPS department.

List of Tyranitar Counters

  • Conkeldurr – Counter/Dynamic Punch
  • Lucario – Counter/Aura Sphere
  • Machamp – Counter/Dynamic Punch
  • Mega Lopunny – Low Kick/Focus Blast
  • Hariyama – Counter/Dynamic Punch
  • Blaziken – Counter/Focus Blast
  • SirFetchd – Counter/Close Combat
  • Shadow Gallade – Low Kick/Close Combat
  • Poliwrath – Rock Smash/Dynamic Punch
  • Toxicroak – Counter/Dynamic Punch
  • Heracross – Counter/Close Combat

So, what Fighting type do you want? For the highest possible damage-dealing, Lucario would be the pick. With Counter and Aura Sphere, Lucario has enough DPS potential to decimate a Tyranitar. However, this is a potentially dangerous pick, as Lucario’s dual Fighting/Steel typing makes it weak to Tyranitar’s Fire Blast, so a single reprisal could knock it flat on its back.

For a safer pick, Conkeldurr’s your mon. Conkeldurr is a pure Fighting type, so it doesn’t have any particular weaknesses to anything in Tyranitar’s kit, and can still dish out plenty of Fighting type damage with Counter and Dynamic Punch.

There aren’t many Fighting type legendaries, but if you’re eager to try one, Rapid Strike Urshifu’s your choice. Urshifu is resistant to every possible type of move Tyranitar has, and its DPS potential is second only to Lucario, making it the optimal balanced choice.
