Primarina was kind of a divisive Pokemon back when Pokemon Sun and Moon came out, and I never really understood why. Putting aside my natural affinity for Water types, it’s a pretty, singing mermaid seal thing. Seems like a pretty likeable design to me, and who doesn’t like a Pokemon that can sing and dance? Of course, maybe you’d be less into the idea if you had one of Primarina’s water balloons blow up in your face, but that’s what you get for sassing it. If you want to match Primarina’s dance, then here are its weaknesses and Raid counters in Pokemon GO.
Primarina Weaknesses and Resistances
Primarina is a Water/Fairy type, the only starter Pokemon to date with any Fairy typing in it, which may make it a bit tricky to wrap your head around. That typing gives Primarina the following resistances:
- Resistant to: Fighting, Bug, Fire, Water, Ice, Dark
- Double-Resistant to: Dragon
- Weak against: Poison, Grass, Electric
While not a juggernaut by any means, Primarina has a solid blend of stats keeping it afloat, with a base attack of 232, a base defense of 195, and a base stamina of 190, all bolstered by a max Raid CP of 1,829, 2,286 boosted.

Primarina Counters in Pokemon GO
While Primarina isn’t overwhelmingly strong like some Raid stars, its above-average attack, combined with decent speed and strong Fairy and Water moves can make a bit of a challenging opponent if you’re not properly prepared. Luckily, while Primarina’s unusual typing does give it a lot of resistances, it doesn’t have much in the way of coverage against its few weaknesses, giving you ample window to counter.
List of Primarina Counters in Pokemon GO
- Zarude – Vine Whip/Power Whip
- Electivire – Thunder Shock/Wild Charge
- Zekrom – Charge Beam/Wild Charge
- Therian Thundurus – Volt Switch/Thunderbolt
- Raikou – Thunder Shock/Wild Charge
- Zapdos – Thunder Shock/Thunderbolt
- Gengar – Lick/Shadow Ball
- Roserade – Poison Jab/Grass Knot
- Magnezone – Spark/Wild Charge
- Tangrowth – Vine Whip/Power Whip
If you’d like to go for the classic Electric over Water counter, your best options are definitely Electivire and Magnezone. Neither of these Pokemon are weak to anything in Primarina’s kit, with Magnezone, in particular, being resistant to Psychic and Fairy moves thanks to its partial Steel typing. In either case, all you need are some doubled-up Electric moves; both Electivire and Magnezone have roughly equivalent stats to Primarina, so the extra edge from type superiority can make all the difference.
If you want to try for a bit of a riskier play, you can exploit Primarina’s Fairy typing with a strong Poison type like Gengar or Roserade. Both of these Pokemon have higher attack stats than Primarina, so a few decisive blows from Poison type moves can put things to bed quickly. The only thing you need to watch for is Psychic, as Poison types are weak against Psychic type moves.
If you’d like to use a Legendary, Therian Thundurus is your guy, with no weaknesses to Primarina’s kit and some decidedly nasty Electric moves up its sleeve. It’s pretty much a guaranteed win.
