Poliwrath Weaknesses and Raid Counters in Pokemon GO

Here's a list of the best Poliwrath counters in Pokemon GO so you can take advantage of those natural weaknesses.

I don’t know whose idea it was to have Poliwag eventually evolve into a muscular frog in Mickey Mouse gloves that punches people, but honestly? I’d like to shake their hand. I know I couldn’t come up with something that delightfully weird out of nowhere. Of course, as weird as Poliwrath is, it is still a muscular frog that punches people, so you shouldn’t approach it halfheartedly. Here are Poliwrath’s weaknesses and raid counters in Pokemon GO.

  • Hydro Pump (Water)

Poliwrath Counters

Poliwrath is a formidable contender with fairly balanced stats and a lot of resistances. Its Fighting type moves, in particular, have a lot of DPS potential thanks to their relatively short cooldowns. This means that going for a counter pick against Poliwrath is basically a necessity, as anything weak to the moves in its kit will be swiftly KO’d.

List of Poliwrath Counters

  • Alakazam – Confusion/Psychic
  • Espeon – Confusion/Psychic
  • Electivire – Thunder Shock/Wild Charge
  • Metagross – Zen Headbutt/Psychic
  • Roserade – Razor Leaf/Grass Knot
  • Mewtwo – Confusion/Psychic
  • Deoxys (Attack)

Luckily, one of its primary weaknesses is Psychic types, the unquestioned damage masters of Pokemon. Pure Psychic types aren’t weak against anything in Poliwrath’s kit, and resist Fighting type moves, so throwing one out is basically a guaranteed victory. As for candidates, we’ve got the usual suspects like Alakazam and Espeon, and if Legendaries are available, Mewtwo and Deoxys (preferably in its Attack forme).

While it’s not exactly necessary, if you really want to take a Poliwrath to the cleaners, you can employ a Shadow Rider Calyrex. Shadow Rider Calyrex’s dual Psychic/Ghost typing grants it a stunning triple resistance to Fighting type moves, making it virtually untouchable. While Poliwrath’s other moves will have average effectiveness, Shadow Rider Calyrex’s own absurd DPS will be more than enough to put it to bed quickly and decisively.
