Mega Venusaur Weaknesses and Raid Counters in Pokemon GO

Here's a list of the best Mega Venusaur counters in Pokemon GO so you can take advantage of those natural weaknesses.

I’ll be honest, I don’t think I knew anyone who had a Venusaur back in the Pokemon Red and Blue days. Everyone wanted either Charizard or Blastoise, so no one I knew chose Bulbasaur as their starter. Even if it gets a little less love than its fellow starters, though, Venusaur is still the very first Grass starter Pokemon, and that title carries no shortage of prestige. This is not a Pokemon you want to take on half-heartedly, especially when it’s Mega Evolved. Arm yourself with knowledge and memorize Venusaur’s weaknesses and Raid counters in Pokemon GO.

Mega Venusaur Resistances and Weaknesses

Mega Venusaur is currently heading up Mega Raids in Pokemon GO, and will likely continue to do so for at least the next week or so. If you were wondering, the Bulbasaur line does have its shiny variants in the Pokemon GO Pokedex, so it is possible to encounter a shiny Mega Venusaur, meaning now’s a great time to challenge it.

Mega Venusaur maintains the same typing as its regular form, Grass/Poison. This means that its resistances break down like this:

  • Resistant to: Fighting, Water, Electric, Fairy
  • Double-Resistant to: Grass
  • Weak against: Flying, Fire, Psychic, Ice

Mega Venusaur Moves

Meanwhile, these are the moves Mega Venusaur has in its kit:

Quick Moves

  • Vine Whip (Grass)
  • Razor Leaf (Grass)

Main Moves

  • Petal Blizzard (Grass)
  • Solar Beam (Grass)
  • Sludge Bomb (Poison)

Mega Venusaur Counters

Mega Venusaur is above average in both the attack and defense departments, so in order to counter it, you’re going to need a Pokemon that can boast the same, while also exploiting its weaknesses. Luckily, since almost all of Mega Venusaur’s moves are Grass type, if you use a Pokemon that resists Grass (and preferably also Poison, but that’s a secondary concern)), then it’ll barely be able to touch you.

List of Mega Venusaur Counters

  • Mewtwo – Confusion/Psystrike
  • Galarian Zen Darmanitan – Ice Fang/Avalanche
  • Chandelure – Fire Spin/Overheat
  • Hoopa Unbound – Confusion/Psychic
  • Calyrex (Shadow Rider) – Confusion/Shadow Ball
  • Reshiram – Fire Fang/Overheat
  • HoOh – Incinerate/Sacred Fire++
  • Lugia – Extrasensory/Aeroblast++
  • Moltres – Fire Spin/Sky Attack
  • Darmanitan – Fire Fang/Overheat

When it comes to resisting Grass moves, you want a Fire type, and when it comes to exploiting Grass weaknesses, you want an Ice type. Guess which Pokemon can do both? Yep, it’s our old friend Galarian Zen Darmanitan. Its duel Ice/Fire typing makes it resistant to Grass moves, and gives it access to a variety of options for exploiting Mega Venusaur’s weaknesses.

While it’s a bit lacking in the defense department, its base attack vastly exceeds Mega Venusaur’s so it can easily win a DPS race. Alternatively, if you’d like something a little more balanced, Chandelure is a quality pick, as its Ghost/Fire typing makes it resistant to both Grass and Poison moves, and it has some brutal Fire moves to fight back with.

If you’d like to use a Legendary, it’d be best to flip the script and exploit Mega Venusaur’s weakness to Psychic moves rather than Fire, just because Psychic Legendaries tend to be stronger. The most powerful Pokemon you could use for this are Shadow Rider Calyrex, Hoopa Unbound, and of course, your favorite Psychic Legendary and mine, Mewtwo.
