The Pokemon Go error does not affect any other part of the game outside retrieving the Friends List. However, it does prevent players from viewing their friends and sending and opening gifts. The good news is that Niantic is well aware of the issue and is working on fixing it as soon as possible. According to the Niantic Help Twitter page, they have stated the following:

“We are investigating technical issues causing problems for some Trainers with social actions such as opening your Friend List and sending invites in Raids. We will provide an update when we have a resolution.”

If you get this error popping up and cannot view your Friends List, we recommend closing out the application and reopening it. Doing this forces another connection to the server, and can sometimes fix the Friends List issue.

You can also wait patiently for Niantic to fix the issue, as it is impacting the biggest Pokemon Go event so far. Keep an eye out on the official Niantic Help Twitter page. We will also keep you posted when we hear more about the issue. In the meantime, check out the list of Pokemon during Go Fest 2020.
