Since their introduction in Generation II, Dark type Pokemon have become one of the trickiest types with some of the greatest potential. Dark type weaknesses and superiorities are a bit esoteric, but many of them have impressive offensive capabilities, not to mention some of the coolest designs. I still miss my Krookodile from Pokemon White… Anyway, since there are so many strong Dark types, it’s handy to know which ones are the cream of the crop. Our definition of “best” for this list will be the Pokemon with the most damage-dealing potential, determined by their optimized DPS with their two best moves and their total damage output statistics. We’ll also include a few sub-categories here just to give you a little bit of variety.

Best Dark Type Pokemon in Pokemon GO

Absol

Let’s start things off with the best pure Dark type Pokemon. That’s a Pokemon with only Dark typing, no secondary typing, of which there are actually surprisingly few. The best pure Dark type Pokemon is Absol, with an optimized DPS of 12.25 and a total damage output of 290.47. If that seems a bit low, don’t worry, we’re just getting started.

Tyranitar

Next, we’ve got the best mixed-Dark type Pokemon. This is a Pokemon with two types, one of which is Dark. The best mixed-Dark type Pokemon is Tyranitar, a Rock/Dark type with an optimized DPS of 12.87 and a total damage output of 679.78.

Third on the itinerary is Shadow Dark types, and no, that’s not redundant. Shadow Pokemon are liberated from Team GO Rocket, and have boosted stats and access to special moves. Once again, the best Shadow Dark type is Tyranitar, with boosted stats including an optimized DPS of 15.42 and a total damage output of 814.27. Now we’re getting somewhere.

Yveltal

Fourth up is Legendary Dark types, officially recognized Legendary Pokemon with either pure or mixed-Dark typing. The best Legendary Dark type Pokemon is Yveltal, a Dark/Flying type. Yveltal has an optimized DPS of 14.35 and a total damage output of 742.54.

Mega Houndoom

Fifth and finally is Mega Dark types, pure or mixed-Dark type Pokemon that have undergone Mega Evolution and either maintain their Dark typing or pick it up in the process. The best Mega Dark type Pokemon is Mega Houndoom, a Dark/Fire type that also happens to be the absolute most powerful Dark type Pokemon in Pokemon GO. Mega Houndoom has an optimized DPS of 21.91 and a mildly absurd total damage output of 888.82. That’s a lotta damage.
