How does XL Candy work in Pokemon GO?

XL Candy is a new item used to power up your Pokemon past the previous level cap of 40. It is part of the Pokemon GO Beyond update, which increases the level cap to 50. Like regular Candy, XL Candy is specific to each type of Pokemon. 

You won’t be able to get your hands on XL Candy until level 40. There doesn’t appear to be any limit to how much you can earn in a single day, which is a good sign for those looking to farm this item. At trainer level 40, you can use XL Candy to power up your Pokemon to level 50, but they won’t be usable in League Battle quite yet.

How to obtain XL Candy

There are a few different ways to obtain XL Candy in Pokemon GO. The good news is you can get XL Candy by catching Pokemon, which is by far the easiest method. You’ll be able to get up to 3 XL Candy from catching a Pokemon, and the amount is random. Legendary Pokemon work the same way, but they only reward a single XL Candy, unfortunately. 

You can also acquire XL Candy through catching a raid boss, training a Pokemon, hatching a Pokemon, Transferring a Pokemon, and converting regular Candy. 

Here’s a breakdown of how to obtain XL Candy:

• Catching a Pokemon: 0-3 XL Candy
• Catching a Raid Boss: 1 XL Candy
• Hatching a 5km Egg: up to 16 XL Candy
• Hatching a 10km Egg: up to 24 XL Candy
• Trading a Pokemon: 1 XL Candy for each player
• Transferring a Pokemon: 1 XL Candy
• Converting regular Candy: 100 Candy to 1 XL Candy

Remember, you can only get XL Candy at Trainer level 40 and above. Trading Pokemon is a great way to get some XL Candy, but you won’t get any if you’re below the level requirements.
