Best Moves for Metagross in Pokémon GO

Best Moves for Metagross in Pokémon GO

Metagross is one of the absolute coolest Pokémon ever devised, hands down. I mean, look at this thing: it’s a giant, steel spider that not only possesses massive smashy mashers, but it has psychic powers and flies. The only way Metagross could be any cooler is if it had a rocket launcher pop out of its head. Both in the mainline Pokémon games and in Pokémon GO, Metagross is almost always a primo team choice. But for Pokémon GO specifically, which moves are the best?

As a Steel/Psychic type, Metagross is naturally resistant to most other Types, aside from its four weaknesses: Fire, Dark, Ground, and Ghost. If it’s not one of those four, though, you’ll find it’s very difficult to injure a Metagross, while a Metagross is quite good at injuring you. As such, Metagross is a great choice for both offensive and defensive builds.

Best Moves for Metagross in Pokémon GO

Metagross’ kit has two Quick Moves and six Charge Moves, and they are as follows:

Quick

  • Bullet Punch (Steel)
  • Zen Headbutt (Psychic)

Charge

  • Earthquake (Ground)
  • Flash Cannon (Steel)
  • Psychic (Psychic, obviously)
  • Meteor Mash (Steel, requires Elite TM)
  • Frustration (Normal, Shadow exclusive)
  • Return (Normal, Purified exclusive)

The quick move you should use depends on whether you’re going for offense or defense. If damage is the name of the game, go with Bullet Punch. It’s a little weaker, but generates more energy. If you want defense, use Zen Headbutt to diversify Metagross’ moveset and deal a little extra flat damage.

For your Charge, Meteor Mash is the number one choice for both offense and defense, rightfully so as it’s pretty much Metagross’ signature move. In the event you don’t have the Elite TM for Meteor Mash, then Psychic is your next best option, again in both cases. Pair it with the same Quick Moves for offense and defense that you’d use for Meteor Mash. In a typing pinch, Earthquake could work, but it costs a lot of energy and doesn’t deal as much damage as other Charge Moves, so it’s best saved for when typing is decisively in your favor.
