What is the Rarest Shiny in Pokémon Go?

I’ve seen men go half-mad in the endless pursuit of shiny Pokémon. It’s honestly a little worrying. But if there’s one thing I understand well, it’s the appeal of limited edition sprites, and in the few instances I’ve actually caught a shiny Pokémon myself, I can’t deny having a brief moment of self-satisfaction. But out of all of the shiny Pokémon out there, there can only be one at the absolute top; the most coveted, most sought after in the entire game. So, what is the rarest shiny in Pokémon GO?

One may assume that the rarest shiny Pokémon would be a Legendary one, but that’s not the case. Legendary shinies are certainly quite rare, but when Niantic wants us to have them, they’re usually pretty up front about it with events and announcements. No, the rarest shiny Pokémon are usually fairly innocuous, something you wouldn’t believe if you didn’t hear about it yourself. So, which one is the most coveted, the most difficult to obtain?

What is the Rarest Shiny in Pokémon Go?

The rarest shiny in Pokémon Go is Alolan Grimer. The Alolan variation of Grimer was added to the PokéDex at the same time as the other Alolan variations like Vulpix and Marowak, during Pokémon GO’s third-anniversary event. At the time, the only way you could obtain particular Alolan variants like Vulpix and Grimer was by hatching them from 7KM eggs, and that was only for regular ones. Your odds of finding a shiny were limited, at best. The thing is, though, Alolan Vulpix was eventually tweaked so that both its regular and shiny variations could be encountered in the wild. Alolan Grimer, on the other hand, cannot be encountered in the wild, shiny or otherwise.

7KM eggs are still the only way to get an Alolan Grimer period, and in the first place, you can only get 7KM eggs by receiving them as a gift from a friend. So in order to get even a regular Alolan Grimer, to say nothing of a shiny one, you need to have a friend with gift that’s willing to send it to you, get the 7KM egg out of it, be willing to walk 7 kilometers to hatch it, and then maybe, maybe, you’ll get lucky and get an Alolan Grimer out of it. To encounter a shiny Alolan Grimer requires several distinct rolls of the dice, so anyone who owns one must be almost supernaturally lucky.
