Pokemon GO Mega Altaria Raid Guide

Pokémon GO Mega Altaria Raid Guide

Here’s a fun fact: Mega Altaria’s Dragon/Fairy typing is completely unique among the entire National PokéDex. Check the whole thing; you won’t find another Dragon/Fairy type anywhere. It makes sense, as Dragon and Fairy types are diametrically opposed, but I suppose that’s a testament to the sheer adaptability of Altaria in its Mega Evolved state. Here’s what you need to know about Mega Altaria Raids in Pokémon GO.

After the recent Community Day put a large quantity of Swablu into circulation, Niantic decided it was a good time to follow up by adding Altaria’s Mega Evolution to Pokémon GO. This fluffy behemoth will start showing up in Mega Raids starting today, and you’ll want to be ready for it when it does.

Due to its esoteric typing, Mega Altaria has quite an interesting array of resistances, which break down like this:

  • Resistant to: Dragon, Bug, Fighting, Water, Grass, Electric, Dark, Fire
  • Weak against: Fairy, Ice, Poison, Steel

Meanwhile, these are the moves in Mega Altaria’s kit:

Quick Moves

  • Dragon Breath (Dragon)
  • Peck (Flying)

Main Moves

  • Dragon Pulse (Dragon)
  • Dazzling Gleam (Fairy)
  • Sky Attack (Flying)

Normally, a Dragon type would be a decent counter for another Dragon, but Mega Altaria’s Fairy typing protects it from Dragon moves. Luckily, that same typing opens it up to some new options. To take advantage of its weakness to Steel types, you can call upon the mighty Metagross. Metagross is resistant to every move in Mega Altaria’s kit, and can double up on Steel moves, making it the absolute best possible pick for this Raid.

If you’re in a Mega mood, this is also a great fight to bring your own Mega Pokémon. Mega Gengar is the best choice, as it has no weaknesses to any of Mega Altaria’s moves, and it can provide Poison type moves to exploit Mega Altaria’s Fairy typing. Having Mega Gengar on deck will also boost the effectiveness of Poison type moves used by other players if you’re looking to synergize a bit.

If all else fails, there’s always our good friend Mamoswine. It’s not the best choice in this case if only because it doesn’t have any notable resistances to Mega Altaria’s kit, but it can double up on Ice moves and deals solid damage, so it makes a good safety pick.
