When Does Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe Take Place?

Assassin's Creed Codename Hexe will be a bold step forward for the franchise, but when will it take place?

Ubisoft outlined the future of the Assassin’s Creed franchise at Ubisoft Forward 2022, announcing several new games and experiences that will release over the next few years. Three new titles were revealed: Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Assassin’s Creed Codename Red, and Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe. While Ubisoft was forthcoming about the historical eras of Mirage and Codename Red, they were coyer about what players can expect from Codename Hexe.

What Is Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe?

Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe is the second of two Assassin’s Creed games that will be a part of the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Infinity platform, the first being Assassin’s Creed Codename Red. Hexe debuted as part of the Assassin’s Creed 15th Anniversary showcase that happened during Ubisoft Forward 2022.

The reveal teaser showed the series’ logo made of bound twigs hanging from a tree branch in the middle of a dark wood. Ubisoft hasn’t provided much information on the game, though the name and teaser do offer some hints as to where and when the game will take place.

Ubisoft hasn’t given a definitive answer to when the game takes place, but between leaks, their official trailer, and the title, it’s easy to glean a few details about Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe. The word “Hexe” is German for “witch,” potentially indicating both location and subject matter.

Witches have a long, sordid history in European history, especially within Germany itself. In the late 1500s and early 1600s, German Catholics conducted mass witch trials that resulted in thousands of deaths across 50 years. The largest of these trials were the Trier witch trials (1587-1593) and the Bamberg witch trials (1626-1631), though there were others during the intervening years.

Ubisoft has said that Codename Hexe will be unlike anything the series has attempted before, which could suggest a game that spans the entirety of this troubling historical period. Alternatively, they could choose to focus on a specific set of trials that were especially violent or impactful.

When Does It Release?

It looks like fans are in for a bit of a wait with Codename Hexe, as it’s likely the furthest Assassin’s Creed title from release. Assassin’s Creed Mirage, a back-to-basics homage to the original game, is slated for a 2023 release that will undoubtedly come with some form of post-launch support. Assassin’s Creed Codename Red is likely the next release after that, which will probably have a tail of its own.

Gamers looking to get their hands on Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe will most likely be waiting until late 2024 or 2025. Ubisoft doesn’t seem eager to oversaturate the video game market with Assassin’s Creed games again, so there will probably be a decent amount of time between each of these games.
