The original Psychonauts wasn’t an especially long game; if you knew what you were doing, and didn’t get hobbled by the Meat Circus, you could probably knock it out in an afternoon or two. Psychonauts 2 is a much denser experience compared to the first, though it still probably wouldn’t take you longer than a few days to get through. Then again, after waiting 16 years for it, I’m darn well inclined to take my time with it. Here’s how long it takes to beat Psychonauts 2.
How long does it take to beat Psychonauts 2?
If you only stick to the bare minimum of content in Psychonauts 2 without skipping any cutscenes, forgoing optional missions, collecting stuff, exhausting dialogue trees, and just generally bumming around, you’ll probably finish the story in about 11 hours. There’s nothing wrong with playing the game like this, as you’ll still get to experience the entirety of the story and all of the great levels.
That said, if you were to indulge your collector’s instincts a bit more, you may find the game a bit meatier than you originally expected. Even if you don’t go for full completion, just taking the time to track down figments and clear any optional missions that happen to fall into your lap can add anywhere from 4 to 8 hours of additional playtime, depending on how thorough you choose to be.
If you’re really willing to go all out, talking to absolutely every character, finding all the collectibles (including figments, memory vaults, emotional baggage, PSI Cards, Norma’s Scavenger- I mean, “Mission Critical Assets,” etc.), then you should get a good 28 hours out of Psychonauts 2 in total. It’s a completionist’s dream game; you can’t even 100% it until you’ve finished the story and entered the post-game. If you like collecting stuff, then buddy, you’ve come to the right place.
