Games Like Dead By Daylight

Lots of people like horror settings, but sometimes for different reasons. I, for one, love old schlocky horror movies, not because they’re scary, but because they’re cheap and hilarious. In that same vein, for as much as people like the tense nature of being a lone human in a horror game, it’s equally fun for many to be the source of that tense feeling. This is why the horror genre and asymmetrical multiplayer games go together like cheese and crackers. Dead By Daylight is one of the current front runners of this particular niche, but if you’re looking to branch out, here’s a few similar games.

Friday the 13th: The Game

Based on the classic horror movie franchise, a gaggle of unlucky camp counselors need to devise a way to escape the summer camp in the dead of night all while being stalked by the infamous Jason Vorhees. The counselor players will need to collect items to aid their escape and hide themselves, while the Jason player can use a bevy of supernatural skills to hunt them down. Due to some legal troubles, this game isn’t getting any more updates, but it’s a decently fun time either with friends or alone.

Dark Deception: Monsters & Mortals

If you haven’t played the original Dark Deception, it’s kind of like a horror-themed Pac-Man, where you try to collect shards in a large maze while being stalked by various horrible monsters. As it turns out, this premise lends itself pretty well to multiplayer. In this game, one team of players tries to collect all of the shards, while a single player tries to hunt them down as various horrors. If that’s not your cup of tea, there’s also a regular multiplayer mode where everyone is a monster battling it out for shards.

Secret Neighbor

You could say a lot about the development and ultimate release of Hello Neighbor, and folks more eloquent than me certainly have. But while the main game was a bit underwhelming, this multiplayer spin-off does a much better job of making the premise work. A team of kids need to break into the Neighbor’s house, find his keys, and unlock his secret basement. Problem is, one of these kids is the Neighbor in disguise, whose goal is to covertly dispatch the kids without the others catching on. Think Among Us with a faster pace and more mustaches.

Left 4 Dead 2

It may be over a decade old, but the classics never truly die, especially when they’re zombies. If you’ve somehow missed the boat on Left 4 Dead and its survivors versus mutant zombie multiplayer all these years, it’s still a perfectly good time to get on board. Not only does this game still have a regular playerbase, it’s also got a thriving modding community always looking for interesting new ways to tweak things. Or just replace all the guns with balloon animals. Of course, if this game’s a little too old for you, then just wait till Back 4 Blood comes out in June, a brand new game with the same basic idea from the original developers of Left 4 Dead.
