How To Unlock Chocobo Companions In Final Fantasy 14

Everyone loves chocobos, the signature horse-sized riding birds of the Final Fantasy franchise. They’re big, they’re cuddly, and they kick like jackhammers; what’s not to love? Naturally, much like other MMORPGs, you’ll want a chocobo of your own in Final Fantasy 14 to ride around on and love and hug and call George. Here’s how to unlock chocobo companions in Final Fantasy 14.

Before you can get your own chocobo, you need to make a decent amount of progress into the game’s main story campaign. Hey, no Final Fantasy game ever gave you chocobos right off the bat. The first requirement is the completion of a level 20 story quest called “A Hero in the Making,” located at the Waking Sands. As part of this quest, you’ll need to join up with one of the three Grand Companies: the Immortal Flames, the Maelstrom, or the Twin Adder. Each of these Companies will require you to complete a particular quest. The quest in question is different for each Company:

  • Immortal Flames: “For Coin and Country,” talk to Swift at the Steps of Nald
  • Maelstrom: “Till Sea Swallows All,” talk to R’ashaht Rhiki at the Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks
  • Twin Adder: “Wood’s Will Be Done,” talk to Vorsaile Heuloix in New Gridania

Once you’ve completed the introductory quest of your Company of choice, you can take on a new quest titled “My Little Chocobo.” For this quest, you’ll need to pay 200 Grand Company Seals to purchase chocobo insurance from your company’s quartermaster.

Once you’ve purchased the insurance, bring it to the proper NPC, and you’ll finally be given a chocobo of your own. You’ll even get to name it! Once the quest is done, you’ll receive a chocobo whistle that will officially add your newly named chocobo to your mounts. Make sure to play the proper music when you’re riding it. You know which song I mean.
