Minecraft over the recent years has benefited from large, annual themed updates. However, people may be wondering why the ‘1.20 update’ is simply just that. The ‘1.20 update’. Unlike the others, it has no name. People may also be wondering why there doesn’t seem to be that much content, compared to the other updates. What is going on with the 1.20 update and why doesn’t it have a name?
The reason for the nameless 1.20 Minecraft Update
Officials at Mojang during Minecon Live 2022 stated that the 1.20 update has no theme because they simply have not decided upon one. Rest assured, before the update goes live there will be a unifying theme to string the content together, but for now, their only aim for the update is to make Minecraft “Minecraftier”.

This actually correlates to the seeming lack of content, or should I say, lack of revealed content. Mojang is now taking a new approach to releases Minecraft updates to avoid the overpromise and underachieve fiasco of the Caves and Cliffs update. Only revealing content when it is late in the production is what Mojang will do from now on, so instead of filling us with ideas like they have done before, they will only reveal the 1.20 update’s features as we get closer to the release date.
And along the way, the theme will make itself apparent and a name will be revealed.
This allows for continuous hype as we travel up to the 1.20 update, and allows for Mojang to set us realistic expectations to avoid disappointment. Additionally, deciding the theme later allows the content itself to naturally develop, instead of producers having to worry about cramming the content to suit the already decided themes.
