Can you Stop Bamboo from Growing in Minecraft?

Bamboo is one of those plants that up until recently, had no real function in the game aside from making Pandas happy. In Minecraft 1.20 however, players are now able to create various craftable items such as Bamboo Planks, Blocks, Trapdoors, Signs and so much more. This is incredibly helpful for those who are living in Jungle Biomes where, upon clearing the area of trees you may require a new material to use on your home. It also offers a new unique style of building block that acts as both decorative and functional with its unique linework in its rings/weave.

Now that you have discovered new ways of crafting building blocks and decorative items using Bamboo, you may need to learn how to stop it from growing. Pausing the growing process of Bamboo allows you to play around with the height of the plant, giving you freedom in creating a Bamboo centerpiece or fencing around your base.

There are two ways to stop Bamboo from growing. These are String or Shears. Whilst String is a common lootable or dropped item in Minecraft, it often requires you to go out into the world in search of Spiders as String is dropped after they die. These can naturally appear at night time or you can find them inside Caves. Regardless of your environment, you will need to stay alert against Zombies and Skeletons. To make Shears all you need is two Iron Ingots. On the Crafting Table of 9 slots, place one Ingot on the fifth slot (numbered left to right) and the second Ingot on the seventh slot. You will see the Shears appear when done correctly, allowing you to craft.

With the String or Shears in hand, simply interact with the Bamboo to put a stop to its growth. Shears are a better choice as there is no visual object in place above the Bamboo, unlike the String when in use.
