Psychonauts was one of my most beloved games of the early 2000s, appealing to me as both a gamer and a budding psychology enthusiast. It was colorful and imaginative, yet also crass and hilarious. I, like so many others, have wanted a sequel for so, so long, and even when it was finally crowdfunded, the wait through development was absolute torture. Finally, though, we have arrived: the sequel I have wanted since I was in grade school is right around the corner. So, when does Psychonauts 2 release?
Microsoft and Double Fine have been drip-feeding tidbits about Psychonauts 2 for the last couple of years as the development has repeatedly started and stopped. It was originally crowdfunded on Fig back 2015, but it wasn’t able to meet its original planned release in 2018, delaying to 2019. Double Fine’s acquisition by Microsoft in 2019 gave the proceedings a shot in the arm, but they were forced to delay again to 2020. And then 2020 happened and, well… yeah. 2020 happened, that’s all that needs to be said.
When does Psychonauts 2 release?
During E3 2021, Microsoft made the official call: Psychonauts 2 will be releasing on August 25, 2021.Â
Despite Double Fine’s acquisition by Microsoft, they have every intention of releasing Psychonauts 2 on every platform it was originally promised for. As such, at its release in August, Psychonauts 2 will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store, and even macOS and Linux.
Thanks to Microsoft’s backing, the game will also be available at launch on Xbox Game Pass on both PC and Xbox consoles, and you’ll also be able to play it through Xbox Cloud Gaming. Pre-orders are already open on all aforementioned platforms.
