NieR Replicant Deathdream Answers

Only in a game by Yoko Taro could a spontaneous text adventure segment be anything approaching normal. I swear, that guy’s on an entirely different wavelength, and we’re all just along for the ride. But hey, it’s a fun ride, so who cares if things get a little weird. Here are NieR Replicant’s Deathdream answers.

Late in the game’s first act, you’ll visit the Forest of Myth, where the citizenry are afflicted by the “Deathdream,” a strange disease that traps people in their dreams, which are represented by text descriptions. By entering the dreams of the citizens and solving the riddles that plague them, you can awaken them from their personal purgatories. While the dream of the Mayor is the only one you’re required by the story to solve, you should help all of the citizens for the rewards they yield.

The Mayor’s Dream

The Mayor’s dream features a short story interspersed with some traditional riddles.

Q: One with it suffers. Two with it is ideal. Three with it is dangerous. What is it?

A: A secret.

Q: I enter through the window, but I break no glass. When night falls, I vanish. What am I?

A: Sunlight.

Q: I have four legs in the morning and two at noon, but I end the night with three. What am I?

A: Man.

The Woman’s Dream

On the left of the Mayor’s house is a woman whose dreams have her trapped in a castle dungeon. You’ll need to help her navigate the dungeon’s halls to escape, Zork-style. The directions you need to go are:

  1. North
  2. East
  3. North
  4. East
  5. North

The Man’s Dream

Further behind the Woman’s house is a man dreaming of a big city. He’ll tell you a bit of a lengthy story, though it’s actually a classic riddle. Here’s the main focus of it:

“Please!” said Alpha. “You have to get me out of this nightmare! I am real!”

“Stop lying!” said Beta. He turned to Nier and threw his hands in the air. “Alpha’s a fake, you know. I’m the real one!”

“What a load of crap,” said Gamma. “Beta is a fake! Everyone knows I’m the only real one around here.”

Q: “Only one form is real. The others are false. The real form will always speak the truth. The false ones will only speak lies.”

A: The real one is Beta.

Don’t worry if you don’t get it, Weiss will explain it after the fact. Aren’t riddles fun? Once everyone’s awake, go talk to the Mayor, and he’ll reward you with one of the game’s 33 weapons.
