Since the Caves and Cliffs update, Mojang has had to seriously reconsider their approach to making, revealing and releasing their content. And this has shown with how they’ve dealt with the 1.20 update. After being nameless for so long, and after so many snapshot features being showcased, we finally have a name for the update: The Trails and Tales Update.
What does the Trails and Tales Update mean for Minecraft?
Upon the tease of the 1.20 update, Mojang didn’t yet have a name for it. Instead, they had many different features and content ideas that still had to be fleshed out. To avoid another Caves and Cliffs conundrum, they decided to drip feed us content as they finalised what was and wasn’t going into the next update. We finally have a name, and with a name comes a theme.

The theme was already pretty well acknowledged, but the name confirms it. This next update will focus on the player’s independant stories and experiences in Minecraft, with more means to travel and more ways to express achievements and personalities. On their own, the features of archeology, camels, armor trims and even bamboo rafts seems dissimilar and disjointed, but under this banner, the connections are clear.
Minecraft is a game of stories and creative expression, and this update will give us the tools we need to indulge in this side of the game. Not all of the Trails and Tales update have been announced, but we can now confirm they will relate somehow to exploration and discovery, or self expression and story telling.
