In Octopath Traveler 2, aside from the brief Crossed Paths sidequests, every one of your party members’ stories is self-contained, with every other party member simply disappearing during their individual story cutscenes. If you’re hoping for more interaction between these characters, though, you can get a small sampling of that through the Travel Banter feature.

Travel Banter is a series of brief, two-person skits that depict two of your party members chatting during a quiet moment. Sometimes they’ll talk about the current circumstances of their ongoing journey, sometimes they’ll reminisce on their own lives, and sometimes they’ll just banter about something innocuous. It’s a pleasant way to get a bit more insight into what makes these characters tick.

Finding Travel Banter Moments

Travel Banter is triggered via a prompt that appears on the top-right of your screen while you’re in the overworld or towns, which is activated by pressing the +/Start button. To make these prompts appear, you’ll need to complete chapters of the party members’ stories, then travel to new towns relevant to those stories. Additionally, if you want them to converse with a particular character, that character also needs to be in your active party. So, for example, if you wanted to hear the story of how Agnea saved up 10,000 Leaves, you would need to complete Chapter Two of Partitio’s story, then enter the town of Wellgrove with Agnea in your party to get the prompt.

Prompts for all relevant Party Banters will appear one after the other. In the event you miss a prompt or don’t have the right character in your party to trigger it, don’t worry; you can find and watch any Travel Banters you fulfilled the conditions for by opening the Main Story tab of the journal, selecting a character, and pressing +/Start. This can also be used to rewatch any Travel Banters you’ve already seen.

While it would be nice to see these characters interact in the main story, Travel Banter is a nice way to get some insight into their personalities and motivations when people aren’t swinging swords around and whatnot.
