How to Switch Weapons Quickly in Sons of the Forest

Inventory management is annoyingly too immersive.

Sons of the Forest, like its predecessor, is more than just a survival game. It’s a survival horror, where you’ll be tackling with all Mother Nature has to offer, including the horrifying and perverted. When it comes to switching between weapons, the tools of your survival, speed is of the essence. Which is exactly why it will become very annoying when you have to crouch down to splay out your inventory as you’re getting chased by God knows what. Here’s how to switch items quickly in Sons of the Forest.

Since Hotfix #2, Sons of the Forest actually has keybinds now. Before the hotfix, players would have to rely on their backpack to switch weapons, and it was only marginally faster than opening your forsaken inventory. With keybinds being in the game, players can now arrange their arsenal in a very efficient and quick system. Note that this system is only available for keyboard and mouse players.

When you open your inventory, hover your mouse above your weapons. With the hotkeys, players can assign their items and weapons numbers, from 0 – 9. It would be heavily recommended to assign a couple of your melee weapons and a ranged weapons to your hotkeys. If you are heading into a particularly specific situation, then hosting more weapons on your hotkeys would be advised. Just make sure you have some hotkeys assigned for food and healing items.

When in combat, all you must do is hit the corresponding number on your keyboard, and you will instantly pull it out to fight your foes.

What about controller players?

For now, all the controller-using players can do is sigh and rely on their backpack for a slightly more convenient method of carrying their weapons around. There may be a hotkey system for controllers in the future, but until then, controller users will have to deal with the annoying management system. Or switch to keyboard and mouse.
