Access to fresh drinking water is one of those things we often take for granted. When you’re trying to survive on an island full of cannibals and mutants, you never know when you’re going to be prohibitively distant from a stream or something. In these moments, ingenuity presents us with portability options. Here’s how to make a canteen in Sons of the Forest.
How to Make a Canteen in Sons of the Forest
The canteen is… well, a canteen. You can use it to gather up drinking water from clean sources like streams or the rare faucet and store it for later. Whenever you’re feeling thirsty, you can just whip it out and take a hearty swig to rehydrate. Just remember to refill it after said hearty swig, lest you be caught with an empty canteen when you need it most.

You can’t craft a canteen with your bare hands. I don’t even know how you would go about doing that. However, while you can’t make a canteen, there is something on the island that most definitely can: a 3D printer.
Creating the Canteen
The 3D printer is found in an underground bunker located a brisk walk northeast from the beach where you first start the game, denoted by a pulsating green mark on your GPS. There’s a cave here that leads underground, eventually dumping you at the entrance to the bunker.
You’ll find the 3D printer on a table next to a laptop, which you can use to select the item you want to craft. Crafting with the 3D printer costs Resin, which you can find a decent supply of around the bunker. The canteen in particular costs a reasonable 100 Resin. Load it up into the printer, select the canteen (or flask, same thing), and watch the miracle of modern science in motion. Once it’s done printing, just grab the canteen out of the machine and go find a river to dunk it into.
Keep that canteen full whenever you can, as you’ll never know when you’ll stumble onto a clean source of water next. Helps to have a quality source of hydration on standby.
