How to Fix Your Stealth Not Working in Starfield?

Stealth doesn't come easy...apparently

Unlike typical Bethesda entries, Stealth in Starfield doesn’t come easy. For those wanting to play the game as if they were the MC (main character) in Thief or Dishonored, the standard Stealth Build in Starfield is one that comes with very few perks. Many have described problems with creating a character that encompasses the Stealth ways of living. With a Skill dedicated purely for these types of Build, literally titled as ‘Stealth‘, those who have been spending their Skill Points after grinding the leveling-up system to afford the four Ranks that are available under this category.

Not only is there a Stealth Tier but you can also dive into the ‘Concealment‘ Skills for Sneak Attacks which are crucial to this Build in Starfield. So what is the problem with Stealth and how do you fix it for your playthrough? This is Vincent’s guide on how to fix your Stealth not working in Starfield. Let’s dive into the issues and possible solutions to fixing and being able to actually use your Stealth Build in Starfield.

How to Successfully Use Stealth in Starfield?

The best way to have a Stealth Build is to actually put the time and effort into leveling up your Stealth and Concealment Skills. To rank up, a Sneak Attack is necessary. If you are XP farming, a great way to do this is to go to high-leveled planets and use Stealth here to kill enemies. However, for those wanting to purely level up their Stealth Skills, you will want to perform as many Sneak Attacks as possible inside low-level planets where Fauna (wildlife) can be found in abundance. Use this to practice your skills and learn what truly marks your detection.

Next, you need to obtain the appropriate equipment for Stealth. You must get your hands on the Chameleon Armor which offers an invisibility perk when you are stationary. This also stacks on your Concealment Skill, offering up to a 50% reduction in visibility. Make sure that you are utilizing Silencers for your Weapons to remain undetected if you are using the Chameleon. Be sure to put time into the ‘Spacesuit Design‘ so that you can upgrade your Chameleon further to reduce detection.

Finally, be aware of the environment as this massively impacts your visibility and the enemy’s ability to detect you. Light plays an important role in the game so when you are using Stealth, it is best against enemies in a dimly lit area and to pick off patrolling, singular enemies as any left alive will shoot in the direction where your silenced bullet came from. As your character makes noise no matter what, focusing on upgrading your suit to reduce the amount of noise you make regardless of being crouched is imperative to having a successful Stealth Build.

What Causes Enemy Detection and How to Deal With It?

The main factors that come into play in detection are the environment you are fighting in (how bright it is, what obstacles are in the way, how many enemies are in the vicinity) and the Level of the enemy you are trying to Sneak Attack or kill with a Suppressed Weapon. Because of these factors, you may find that regardless of what you do, how slow you move, or how much you rely on the Chameleon Armor, you are always spotted.

Because of these factors, you must put a ton of time into perfecting your Starfield Stealth Build. This will not be completed the moment you put some points into Stealth as a whole. Instead, Weapon and Spacesuit Mods, Stealth and Concealment Skills, understanding your surroundings, and acknowledging the Stealth Meter as you play, are all crucial components to being able to perform undetected in Starfield.

We recommend putting as much time into your Stealth Build early in the game so that you can use it in higher-level areas where more XP is up for grabs.

How to Perform a Sneak Attack in Starfield?

To perform a Sneak Attack, it is best that you unlock Rank 1 of Stealth as this offers the Stealth Meter. This will tell you if you are ‘Hidden‘ from the LOS (line of sight) of enemies. Whilst you can perform Sneak Attacks in ‘Caution‘, you must remain undetected from enemies in order to have the option to complete a Sneak Attack. A Sneak Attack can be performed with Melee or Firearm/Ranged Weapons. You should use a Suppressor on your Weapons so that you remain undetected after successfully taking an enemy down.

When you have aimed in with your weapon or somehow got close enough to perform a stealth kill with a Melee Weapon, execute the action by firing or hitting the enemy (a headshot is key here). If you hit them whilst undetected, you will have successfully performed a Sneak Attack. It is best to perform Sneak Attacks on enemies that are facing away from you. The Chameleon and Suppressed Weapons will aid you here as gathering Sneak Kills is essential to ranking up your Stealth Skill.
