How to Complete Terminal Overload in Destiny 2

Turn it on and tear the knob off.

Hollywood movies have led me to believe that “overloading” any given piece of advanced technology isn’t especially difficult, and can be accomplished by mashing a few buttons on a keyboard. If Destiny 2’s Terminal Overload is any indication, it is a much, much more difficult process than that. Here’s how to complete Terminal Overload in Destiny 2.

How to Complete Terminal Overload in Destiny 2

Terminal Overload is a new kind of public activity in Destiny 2 added with the Lightfall expansion. To put it as succinctly as possible, it involves you and a group of five buddies taking on a veritable army of Cabal Shadow Legion combatants as you attempt to break their stuff. This is not an easy undertaking, as evidenced by the activity’s recommended power level of 1810. While it is possible to complete the activity below that, it’s advised that you at least finish the new Lightfall campaign content before you give it a swing, both to level up and to get easy access to relevant areas.

Terminal Overload takes place exclusively on Neomuna, though the precise location of the activity cycles between three set spots on a daily basis. You can see where the day’s Terminal Overload is going down on your map after you complete the Lightfall campaign, though it is also possible to stumble into one that’s already in progress.

Completing the Three Phases

Terminal Overload is made up of three randomly-selected phases, each requiring you to defeat enemies, capture objectives, or defeat a boss. If the activity hasn’t already started when you’ve arrived, you can kick it off by finding a large Cabal Psion and shooting the little pyramid-shaped fragments floating around them.

Your current task will be shown on the top-left of the screen. Some of the objectives you may need to accomplish include:

  • Capture the Sync Plate: Clear out the enemy presence in the indicated area to capture it
  • Defeat Shadow Legion reinforcements: Defeat enemy combatants until you reach 100%
  • Destroy Vex Nodes: Destroy the designated Vex Nodes around the area. You can’t do this with your regular weapons; you need to find and defeat a Minotaur to get an Arc Cranium, then use that to destroy the Nodes.
  • Defeat Psion Spotters: Defeat the highlighted Psion enemies before they can call for backup
  • Destroy Anchors: Destroy the highlighted anchors to destabilize the array. You can use your regular weapons for this.

Once you reach the first phase, the Psion that you first encountered will reveal themselves, and you’ll need to defeat them in a boss fight. They’ll cast a shield over themselves that makes them invulnerable, but you can break it by destroying the dark fragments floating around them. Whenever their shield is broken, you’ll get a damage phase in which you can hurt them, but the shield will come back eventually, so try to deal as much damage as you possibly can before it does.

Keep breaking the boss’s shield and laying the smackdown on them until they ultimately drop, and you’ll clear the activity. That was way harder than the movies made it look…
