How Many Companions Are There in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Like many party-based RPGs, Baldur’s Gate 3 allows players to assemble a diverse party of adventurers, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, and unique backstories.

Companions can be found throughout the game’s world, and your interactions and choices will determine who joins your cause. As you progress through the game, the number of potential companions in Baldur’s Gate 3 grows, which opens up a conveniently wider range of options to suit various playstyles and strategies.

This game features a compelling cast of five total companions (excluding temporaries), each with their own unique abilities, personalities, and storylines. Whether you’re seeking a cunning rogue, a powerful spellcaster, or a stalwart warrior, there’s a companion to suit every role and playstyle in Baldur’s Gate 3!

The reservoir of five warriors that players can choose from is made up of a High Elf Rogue, a Githyanki Fighter, a Human Wizard, a Human Warlock of a Fiend Patron, and a High Half-Elf Cleric of Trickery. Players can only have up to three of these companions in their party at a time, so make sure to choose your companions in Baldur’s Gate 3 wisely!

All Companions in Baldur’s Gate 3 – Classes, Species, and Backgrounds

Baldur’s Gate 3 has a total of five companions that players can choose from: Wyll, Shadowheart, Lae’zel, Gale, and Astarion. Each of these companions has a host of unique abilities and strategies; here are all of their respective roles and unique abilities:

  • Wyll – Human Warlock of a Fiend Patron
    • Wyll is a Human Warlock with a Noble background. He’s a good “jack of all trades” companion if you’re ever unsure of who to add to your party for an upcoming fight.
  • Shadowheart – High Half-Elf Cleric of Trickery
    • Shadowheart is a Half High Elf Cleric with an Urchin background. She’s strong and is a good choice for those who need a ranged fighter or a decent healer for their team.
  • Lae’zel – Githyanki Fighter
    • Lae’zel is a Githyanki Fighter with a Soldier background. She’s a jacked warrior and a straight-up tank who can and will carry you through any battle without issues.
  • Gale – Human Wizard
    • Gale is a Human Wizard with a Sage background. He’s an exceedingly powerful ranged fighter, but he goes down easily if he’s hit too often.
  • Astarion – High Elf Rogue
    • Astarion is a High Elf Rogue with a Noble background, like Wyll. He makes a decent Scout due to his Rogue status, but that’s honestly about it; he’s an okay fighter, but I wouldn’t choose him over a tank like Lae’zel or a healer like Shadowheart.

One of the many joys of Baldur’s Gate 3 is the ability to form a well-rounded party that maximizes synergies between companions. Some companions may have complementary skills or abilities that can greatly enhance your effectiveness in combat and exploration, so keep that in mind when assembling your party!

Each of this game’s companions brings a unique set of abilities, personalities, and storylines that add depth and complexity to your journey. By carefully selecting and nurturing your companions, exploring their personal quests, and harnessing the power of synergy, you’ll forge a formidable party capable of conquering the challenges that await you in this captivating RPG.
