Man, I’m getting old. I still remember those days where if you wanted to play a game online, you just played it. You didn’t need a million different subscriptions to a million different services. Though, then again, a lot of the online games I played were pretty bad, so maybe my frame of reference is a little skewed on that. Nevertheless, it is still nice to get one of those rare instances where you don’t need to cough up for a subscription to play online. That leads us to today’s question: can you play Call of Duty: Warzone without a PlayStation Plus subscription?
Warzone was added post-release to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (not to be confused with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare) in March of last year. It was a self-contained battle royale gameplay mode, because of course it was. Gotta get those Fortnite players across the way somehow. But one of the major draws of games like Fortnite is that it’s free to play, no subscriptions required. In order to match one of its major draws, Warzone would need to offer that same feature. So… does it?
Do You Need PS Plus to Play CoD Warzone?
PlayStation 4 players do not need a PS Plus subscription to play Warzone online. Warzone is an entirely self-contained game mode, which is separate from other multiplayer modes. If you’re looking to grind some weapons in Multiplayer mode, you will need a PS Plus for that, but Warzone has no such bar to entry.
However, just for the sake of covering our bases, we should clarify that this only applies to PlayStation 4 players of Modern Warfare (and also PC players, but that goes without saying). If you’re playing Modern Warfare on an Xbox One, then you will need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play Warzone. So if you want to play Warzone and get the best value for it, you should play the game on either a PS4 or PC.
