Most people have had nothing but nice things to say about Sons of the Forest, but some players are frustrated with the insane number of enemies in this game. The number of enemies definitely contributes to the game’s difficulty, but is it really too much? Keep reading to find out if the enemy count in Sons of the Forest truly is too high.

Are There Too Many Enemies in Sons of the Forest?

There really is a crazy number of enemies in Sons of the Forest, but honestly, whether or not that number is too high is mostly just up to personal preference. After all, no one decides to play a survival horror game because they think it’ll be easy. If you’re a seasoned survival fanatic, however, and Sons of the Forest still managed to sweep you off your feet, then you may be comforted to know that you’re not alone.

There are a lot of complaints that have been lodged online about how difficult this game is compared to its predecessor. Many fans of The Forest that thought they’d have this game beaten in a day were really caught off guard by this game’s brutal enemies. The wussy enemies in The Forest ain’t got nothin’ on the ruthless enemies of Sons of the Forest; they’re similar in style to the enemies that we all know and love from The Forest, but their brutality has been dialed up to 100.

You don’t just have to worry about one type of cannibal or one type of mutant in this game either. I mean, there are literally no less than 4 different types of cannibals alone: Regular Cannibals, Muddies, Masked Cannibals, and Cave Cannibals. You know it’s bad when the least dangerous thing on a list is “regular cannibals”.

Just like there are 4 different types of cannibals, there are also no less than 4 different types of mutants to worry about as well: Fingers (you don’t want to know), Twins, John 2.0, and Sluggies. “Sluggies” sounds almost purposefully innocuous, like the game is trying to lure you into a false sense of security with faux-adorable names. Sluggy sounds like it’d be the name of a toddler’s first pet, but it’s actually the name of the slug-like masses of mutant human(?) flesh that terrorize players in Sons of the Forest. Regardless of whether or not this game is too difficult, it’s definitely gross.

So not only are there a ridiculous number of enemies in this game, but the enemies themselves are also ridiculously strong. Whether or not this game has far too many enemies is honestly up to you to decide, but if you’re playing it for the first time ever, then you may want to try playing it in multiplayer with some of your seasoned survival-gamer buddies first.

How to Get the Red Mask in Sons of the Forest

If you want to be left alone by the massive hordes of enemies in Sons of the Forest, then you need to get your hands on a Red Mask. The Red Mask is a cosmetic item that can be worn by the player to ward off cannibals, it’s similar to the red paint in The Forest (I guess cannibals just have mad respect for the color red). It’s not incredibly easy to obtain, but it could definitely be way worse. Here’s how to craft a Red Mask in Sons of the Forest:

  • Locate and travel to one of the 3D printers on the island.
    • The easiest 3D printer to get to is located on the western portion of the island, between the snowy mountains and the ocean. If you travel to this area then you should see a green point of interest on your mini-map, which will mark the exact location of the printer.
    • Make sure you have 150 Printer Resins in your inventory. You should be able to find plenty of it in the same room as the 3D printer.
  • Interact with the 3D printer and scroll through the craftable items until you see the Red Mask.
  • Hold “E” and it should craft it for you.
  • Congratulations! You are now the proud owner of the Red Mask in Sons of the Forest! You can equip it right away after crafting it.
