How does level scaling work in Remnant: From the Ashes?

After the successful launch of Remnant: From the Ashes, many new players are starting to give the game a shot. This is a brand new third-person shooter RPG from the Gunfire Games studio. One of the main mechanics players are asking about is level scaling. How does level scaling work in Remnant: From the Ashes?

A lead designer for Gunfire Games named Ben Cureton posted a detailed explanation on Reddit about how level scaling works in this game.

Weighted Average Power

Remnant: From the Ashes uses a weight average to determine your power. The highest level item equipped on your character or in your character’s inventory is used to calculate a weighted average. A +5 gun (level 6 power), +3 pistol, +2 sword, and +1 armor would give you a weight average of level 5. This means each new area you load into will be 6 (your level plus one). Your armor, in this example, would be below par. This system gives incentive to players to evenly level up their weapons and armor.

Loot Factors

The resources used to upgrade your gear, like Iron and Hardened Iron, drop based on your actual average level. In the example above, average level would be level 3. In this case you would keep finding regular Iron until your average is +5.

Boss Levels

Bosses have a global minimum level. For example, the world boss of City has a minimum level of 5. If you fight this boss and all your gear is only +2, you would be under powered. You can go back and level up, and then fight the boss again and he will remain the same level as when you loaded in the zone. This is important because it means if you are stuck in one part of the game, you can backtrack and get more powerful.

Re-rolling Campaigns

If you level up to 21 (+20 on all items) and go back to the boss in the previous example, he would be very easy . Once a zone is spawned, it will not increase in difficulty unless you re-roll the campaign. This can be done by going to a checkpoint and clicking the re-roll campaign option.
