For those out there that are on Playstation, the question of if you should free Penny is a moral dilemma we’re going to jump into today. We’ll explain the differences between both choices, and which one is ultimately the correct one for you.

In terms of gameplay impact, it doesn’t make a difference whether or not you free Penny. The only impact the choice has on the game is that if you do free Penny, she’ll wear a hat while she operates your shop in Hogsmede.

So, ultimately, whether or not you free Penny is ultimately a roleplay decision. Freeing her would be the ‘morally right’ thing to do, but owning a House Elf in Hogwarts Legacy isn’t seen as any kind of negative thing – especially since you can treat Penny well even if you don’t free her.

Regardless of whether or not you free her, Penny will continue to work in your Hogsmeade shop. Despite not belonging to you, she will stick around all the same.

Penny and the Hogsmeade shop come with the exclusive quest “Haunted Hogsmeade”. Players will gain access to this quest in Hogsmeade once the game enters winter. After the winter cutscene triggers, you’ll be able to pick the quest up. To progress the months in Hogwarts Legacy, you need to progress the main story.

This quest is exclusive to PlayStation players for the first year of Hogwarts Legacy. After that, it will open for all other systems. The reward for this quest is a new vendor in Hogsmeade – a shop that you purchase, and a House Elf to operate it. Penny is that House Elf.

You can’t customize the shop like the Room of Requirement, but you can select its name from a list of predetermined options. The only gameplay benefit the shop has is that you get 10% better prices for selling your gear there. You can’t purchase anything from the shop, though.
