Fun science fact: osmium, atomic number 76 on the periodic table, is the densest naturally-occuring element in the world, even more than lead. It’s used primarily in the creation of super-tough metal alloys, which in turn are used to make chemical catalysts, electrical contacts, and for some reason, fountain pen tips. When you’re terraforming a planet, such as in The Planet Crafter, osmium is surprisingly important material for advancing your scientific pursuits. Here’s where to find osmium in The Planet Crafter.
Where to Find Osmium in The Planet Crafter
While osmium is produced as a byproduct of nickel refining in real life, in The Planet Crafter, it can be found in raw deposits within several ice caves found across the planet. At the start of the game, when the temperature of the planet is very low, you can’t pierce this ice, but as the planet warms up, the ice weakens, and you can eventually break through. Osmium typically appears either next to or close to natural deposits of sulfur, so if you enter an ice cave and find some sulfur on the ground, odds are good you’re on the right track.
Aside from these natural deposits, osmium can very rarely spawn from crashed meteorites or scavenged crates, though the odds of this are rather low. Once you’ve procured some osmium, you can put it toward the construction of more advanced scientific equipment like laboratories. The best thing you can use osmium to craft, though, is an Ore Extractor. When placed in particular locations, Ore Extractors can passively dig up effectively endless supplies of free metals for you, including more osmium if you place it in the right spot.
Osmium can be dug up in a few spots, but two of the most consistent locations are the ice caves in Sulfur Valley and Spike Canyon. If you visit these locations looking for natural osmium, make sure to note down their locations for later.
