There are plenty of things to do in this game to keep players occupied and busy as they pursue both the main storyline and several side missions. One of the most interesting parts of Sons of the Forest is that you can build a base to your exact specifications, or even construct multiple buildings located at strategic points on the island. In this guide we cover where you should consider setting up your camp, and all of the best options for places to call home.

Where Should You Build Your Base in Sons of the Forest?

There are a number of spots that are optimal for you to set up your base, but choosing the one that is the best for your playstyle is important to getting the most out of this fantastic and terrifying survival game. Here are some of the best options to pick for where you should build your main home, or alternative outposts.

Build Near a River

In Sons of the Forest you have the ability to dam rivers and change your environment in other ways. This can be used to help you transport items downstream, as if you simply walk opposite the river’s current after you’ve dammed it and begin cutting wood, sending the logs downstream will quickly send them to where your base is. This saves you a walk and a lot of time. You are also very close to an easy source of water which can be extremely helpful.

Build on Goose Lake

Perfect for newer players, this lake has a lot of water and plenty of animals nearby to keep you and any companions well fed. It is very easy to spot approaching enemies from the lake, and you can even build on a cliff nearby which is impossible for enemies to climb up. Although you cannot get on top of it either, using it as an impenetrable wall will greatly improve your defenses!

Check Out the South Beach

The South Beach is close to the forest, but there is a wide stretch of land where you can easily spot any mutants or other hostiles making their way towards you. And after all, who wouldn’t want to hang out on a beach! The yacht is close by this beach, and there is a cave with more resources for you to obtain when you go exploring that is nearby as well. One problem with this beach is food, but seagulls can keep you fed if you know where to look.

The Smaller Islands

There are a few small islands close by on the map which can offer shelter and protection for players. Cannibals cannot get to you because of the distance and the ocean separating the islands from the larger map. This means you will not need to build a base that is super defensible, saving you resources which can be put to use for other things. However, you will need to find a food source, and fast, because there is not much to eat on these tiny islands!

Construct a Treehouse!

Haven’t you always wanted to live in a treehouse since you were a kid? Well, now you can! Take advantage of the height benefit to spot incoming enemies from afar and stay off the ground so that you are safe from hostiles. There are some drawbacks to this strategy, like having to come down in order to get more food and water, but it definitely has many reasons for being your top choice as well.

The Snow Biome

Although it is frosty and freezing, the Snow Biome has a limited number of mutants which will spawn inside of it. This makes it a great place to set up shop in the late-game, as players will be looking to avoid the increasingly difficult enemy attacks plaguing their every waking hour. Make sure that you bring a warming suit and some materials to make a fire, because this place can get cold!

Keep Space in Mind

If you are playing multiplayer, or just know you will be collecting a lot of items in the game, you will want to build on a plain or somewhere else that offers room for expansion. Making sure that you plan ahead when building your shelter is important to keeping ahead of the game’s fast-paced world and staying alive. A place that starts off with a lot of size but becomes cramped over time is not ideal for those playing with others, or for gamers who enjoy having an abundance of living space.
