Y’know, breeding animals in a survival crafting game is one thing, but talking about breeding sapient Villagers is kinda messed up. I guess it could be worse, though; at least you’re not eating them. Soylent Green hasn’t been implemented into Minecraft, at least not yet. Well, let’s shelve the spooky 70s dystopian talk for the moment and get to the point: here’s how to breed Villagers in Minecraft.
Much like Minecraft’s numerous animal Mobs, Villagers can be coerced into reproducing under the right circumstances. Creating more Villagers is beneficial to you, as not only can they all be traded with, but in the event an important member of your Villager community is killed by a stray Skeleton, you’ll have more in reserve to take on their role.
How to Breed Villagers in Minecraft
Despite the fact that Villagers are human (or at least humanoid), getting them “in the mood” isn’t especially different from breeding animals. First, you’ll need to find a pre-established village with a sufficient existing population of Villagers. Ideally, you want three times as many doors in the village as there are Villagers.
Next, you’ll need to construct a… breeding room, for lack of a better term. All you need is a large, empty building three blocks in height containing at least three beds; two for the parents, one for the offspring, with enough clearance height above them that they can stand on top of them.
Any two Villagers can breed, though you’ll need to have traded with both of them at least once to… establish a rapport with them, I guess. You’ll then need to throw a particular amount of food at both of the Villagers to have them eat and increase their willingness. Those foods are:
- 3 Loaves of Bread
- 12 Carrots
- 12 Potatoes
- 12 Beetroots
Once all of the conditions have been met, leave the Villagers alone for around 20 minutes of real time. With any luck, when you return, the two will be accompanied by a baby Villager, which will mature into a full adult Villager in another 20 minutes time.
