Complete Artillery Guide for Hell Let Loose
There are a couple of things that you need to know before you even sit at the artillery gun in Hell Let Loose. The main thing, however, is that you can’t play solo with artillery. If you decide to man this weapon, you better be ready for some close cooperation with your team and, most importantly, your commander, who is taking care of the overall battle tactics.
Vital points to keep in mind when playing artillery:
- Both teams have 3 artillery guns each at the center HQ (not all maps have artillery, however).
- The gun’s maximum range is 1600m, which means you can’t reach past 3rd grid row from the enemy’s HQ.
- The explosive artillery grenades cost 3 munitions, while the smoke ones cost 5 munitions. Be careful how you spend these because you are taking away from the team’s total amount of munition available instead of your own individual pile. Talk to your commander to see what your limits are.
Getting Started with the Big Guns
The artillery gun has 2 positions – the gunner and the loader. But it’s recommended that you man the gun yourself, as switching between these positions is quite easy and fast.
Naturally, you won’t be able to see your targets since they are really far away, so you’ll be counting on your team or commander to mark the enemy positions for you. Once you see the marking of an enemy tank or infantry, let’s say, you can start preparing to pummel them with lead.
The artillery gun’s barrel can move in 2 ways: left-right and up-down. Firstly, move the gun in the left-right manner until you reach the marked point. If you can’t go left/right enough while sitting as a gunner, switch to the loader, as that position can move the base of the artillery gun as well, giving you wider maneuverability.
Once you’re locked in on the position, now is the time to set the distance. Artillery guns shoot in an arc, so moving the barrel up and down will change the distance that your shells can reach. As soon as you man the artillery gun, you’ll see a distance table on the left side of your screen. This tells you what elevation setting you need to select for each distance. For example, 1600m (the max range) will require you to set the gun elevation to 622 MIL.
Advanced Artillery Tricks
Since not all enemies are going to be at a round distance (1600m,1000m, 500m, etc.), you’re going to need to edit the MIL value approximately to hit your target. Alternatively, you can use one of a dozen online artillery calculators like this one that can give you the exact MIL value for each distance for the artillery gun of each faction.
When you land a kill, you will hear a sound effect confirming that. However, you won’t have eyes and ears out there on the battlefield, so you’ll always need to be in tight communication with soldiers around the map who can tell you where your rounds are falling and if you need to make any changes.
Keep in mind that the game wants to be as realistic as possible, so your shells won’t always land in the exact same spot, even if you don’t move your gun an inch. When you fire a barrage of 5 or 6 shells, you’ll see that most of them will land in a radius of about 20m. Also, they have a traveling time of about 20 seconds, so remember that as well before firing.
