In Disney Dreamlight Valley, you’ll definitely want to stay on top of the tools at your disposal. Especially considering how certain areas are inaccessible without upgrading a specific tool! It can be particularly frustrating when you need to get to a specific area, but you’re blocked by mushrooms or tree trunks. But, how can you upgrade your tools? Read on to learn about upgrading tools in Disney Dreamlight Valley.
How to Upgrade Royal Tools
In Dreamlight Valley, there are three tools that can be upgraded — the Pickaxe, the Shovel, and the Watering Can. Each can be upgraded in different locations by interacting with different characters.
Pickaxe Upgrades — Ice
To earn the ice upgrade for your pickaxe, follow these instructions:
- Travel to the Frozen Realm.
- Speak with Elsa; complete her quests. Doing so will unlock the first of two ice upgrades, allowing for the breaking of small ice crystals. Alas, in order to do this at all, you’ll first need to do several quests for Anna.
- Once Elsa moves to Dreamlight Valley, complete the ‘Breaking the Ice’ quest, and you’ll unlock the second ice upgrade, allowing for the breaking of large ice crystals.

Pickaxe Upgrades — Coral
To earn the coral upgrade for your pickaxe, follow these instructions:
- Travel to Moana’s Realm.
- Speak with Maui; complete his quests. Doing so will unlock the first of two coral upgrades, allowing for the breaking of small corals.
- Once Maui moves to Dreamlight Valley, complete the ‘A Tale of Stone and Fire’ quest, and you’ll unlock the second coral upgrade, allowing for the breaking of large corals.
Shovel Upgrade
To earn the shovel upgrade, follow these instructions:
- Travel to the Frozen Realm.
- Complete Anna’s quests until she decides to move to Dreamlight Valley.
- Finish out her friendship quests until she agrees to upgrade your shovel. You’ll then have the ability to remove any tree stumps blocking your path.
Watering Can Upgrade
To earn the watering can upgrade, follow these instructions:
- Find Merlin.
- Complete his friendship quests until you can take on ‘The Final Quest.’ You’ll then have the ability to get rid of those pesky mushrooms blocking your path.
