What was previously and appropriately titled, The Shivers by Developers, Clock Wizard Games, has released their Early Access Horror Game, Demonologist. Here, you will need to work in a team of up to four players or brave the hauntings yourself as a demonologist. Your job is to venture into the great unknown to answer if ghosts are truly real. Unfortunately the types of ghost you will be handling are nefarious and hostile so be on guard at all times. Whether you are a Phasmophobia veteran or someone who has never tried Ghost Hunting before, this Demonologist Beginner’s Guide will show you the tips and tricks on how to play and survive within the haunted and confined spaces.
Demonologist Beginner’s Guide: How to Play
The aim of the goal is two-fold, first players must figure out the entity type via a collection of evidence you must conduct yourself through the use of experimentation. You are handed a set of Tools that are key to finding out what entity lies within the darkness. The entity is randomized, with no clear pattern for you to figure out on what entity type will appear every time you enter a match. Before entering a match however, you must select your Loadout. You are given a base Loadout to use, with a kit including a Flashlight and the core Tools needed to collect evidence. Other Tools available to purchase are items for your safety and/or to exorcise the entity.

An entity can only be exorcised after you have figured out what its type is. Every Map has its unique way of exorcising the evil spirit. For example, in the Abandoned House, players must locate 5 fingers to perform the banishment ritual. As more Maps get added through development, the bonus objective of exorcism will be different. The exorcism cannot however, be achieved until you have completed the optional objectives which are:
- The Ghost must blow out a Candle (Abandoned House).
- You need to take a good Photo of the Ghost (Abandoned House).
- Locate the silhouette of a sitting human via the Ectoplasma Glass (Abandoned House).
- Find the Time of Death and input this into the 3 Wall Clocks (Cyclone St).
- Find Gun Parts (Hospital).
This set of objectives require you to purchase the Candle and Photo Camera but you only obtain money through correctly guessing the entity typing and hitting those optional objectives to exorcise the entity. Therefore, players will need to correctly guess the entity type through multiple playthroughs before being able to execute their first exorcism.
How to Use the Controls
The main Controls you need to be aware of are how to use your Journal (J) to access your Evidence List. As you are using the Tools to locate and access the entity type, you will need to either tick off what you have successfully witnessed inside the haunted place, or cross the item off the list if it did not appear. To do so, simply use the left-mouse button to click on the box to tick it or double-click on the item to cross it out. As you go through each item on the list, the entity types on the left-hand side will grey out, telling you that these are not what you are currently encountering in the game. Once you think you have the correct entity type, double-click on the entity name and select ‘Confirm’ on your choice. You need to be sure on this as you cannot change your mind once you hit ‘Confirm’.
Most of the Tools at your disposal will immediately be in use as soon as you equip these to your hand. However, specific items such as the Spirit Box and Ecto Glass must be brought to your protagonist via the left-click button.
Demonologist Beginner’s Guide: Tips and Tricks
There are currently three Maps available as of Demonologist’s release: Abandoned House, Hospital and Cyclone Street. To access these Maps however, you need to level up. This is done by guessing the correct entity types consistently throughout your playthrough. Therefore you will need to accurately guess the right entity type repeatedly to level up through the ranks so that you can unlock the next Map. For example, the Hospital Map is available after players reach Level 10. You can refer to your progress via the top-left bar on your Loadout Screen. Completing the main objectives and bonus objectives within a match will also give you experience that adds onto your progression bar to level up.
When you enter the Map, be sure to refer to your sanity bar inside the HQ so that you are always aware of how close you are to a Hunt. You need to make sure that you are always within well-lit areas to keep your sanity high. You will need to find the Entity Room in order to appropriately begin your investigation. This is the room in which the majority of the paranormal activity appears in.
The Abandoned House has two floors for you to investigate, whilst the Hospital has three floors including a Morgue as its Basement. The House is easier to complete and traverse around as you will quickly learn of the Maps level design. However the same cannot be said for the Hospital, being a much darker atmosphere than Abandoned House, you may need to take items such as Candles in order to keep your sanity intact as you explore. You are in for a lot more scares inside the Hospital than the Abandoned House so prepare yourself for that. The investigation process within the Hospital will likely take longer than the Abandoned House due to its larger size.
How to use the Tools to Gain Evidence
- Spirit Box – To use the Spirit Box, use left-mouse button to speak to the entity. If the entity can respond, the figure of a demon, top-right of the Box will light up red to indicate that the entity is communicating. This should be used first as you enter the premises.
- EMF Detector – The Detector is perfect in located the Entity Room. With its archaic use of a cockroach where the device detects how much paranormal activity is happening in the room you are in. With a gauge of 0-5, you will be able to use this to find where the entity resides via a high meter reading. The Detector can be placed within the Entity Room so you can record your findings via the HQ.
- UV Flashlight – Used to find fingerprints against the surfaces. The fingerprints appear as hands, so be on the lookout for that, rather than separate fingerprints that could be harder to spot.
- Easel Canvas – This should be placed inside the Entity Room. Some types will interact with the Canvas and paint their masterpiece straight onto the Easel so be sure to check this so you can add this into your evidence.
- ESG Device – This Device is one of the hardest to use for the fact that the entity can make its appearance and disappear just as fast as it appeared. You will need to place this inside the Entity Room and look out for a visual reading of the entity which will be captured in a single shot which will quickly vanish. Therefore, you will need to either stay in the room or place a Tripod Camera down in order to view any findings.
- Ectoplasma Glass – This Glass requires you to hold it up to your eyes (click left-mouse button) and search for any visual signs of the entity via white plasma. This will typically be left on the walls and look like glowing-white paintbrush strokes.
We highly recommend that when you enter the haunting area, you utilize these Tools first in the order of: Spirit Box, EMF Detector and Ectoplasma Glass. The Spirit Box will remove half of the typings from your Evidence List if you hear a response from the entity. Next, the EMF Detector will help you tremendously in finding the Entity Room, finally the Ectoplasma Glass will help you hit two objectives, figure out the entity’s type and begin the exorcism. If you are working with a team, the other Tools such as ESG Device and Easel Canvas are best used with someone staying at the HQ, whilst another placed these items down for the player at the Base to record any evidence.
Another Tool that is important to note is your protagonist’s breath. This will tell you if you are in a room where the temperature has dropped to freezing. This has the visual indication of the fog in the character’s breath. This can also be used as a sign of you entering the Entity’s Room. You should also designate someone to hold onto Survival Items which help towards ensuring your survival and also to keep your sanity intact. These are Flashlights, Candles, Sanity Pills and the Crucifix.
Demonologist Beginner’s Guide: How to Survive
As you spend more and more time within the Entity’s Room, upon finding it using your Tools, you will find that the longer you spend with the entity itself, the higher chance that your sanity depletes. If your sanity reaches zero, the Hunt will begin. This is when the entity grows violet and will attack you. There are two options when this happens, you can either hide within the haunted place or equip a Crucifix (an item that can be purchased in the Shop and added to your Loadout). You do however, need to be holding the Crucifix in your hand when the Hunt begins so that if you are attacked, you will survive the encounter. Your primary way of survival however is to hide from the hostile entity.
But you should not never your sanity hit zero, ever. Therefore, you should not need to purchase the Crucifix. If you require the Crucifix however, it has a one-time usage in that if you survive the encounter by the item saving your soul, the Crucifix will be used and you will have to purchase another. Make sure that you are not spending too much time within the Entity Room. The Entity can mess with your surroundings, including the lights, for that reason you should either leave when your surroundings begin to change, or use Candles to keep your sanity in check. In Maps such as Abandoned House, be sure to turn on the lights whenever possible.
The goal of the game is to figure out the entity’s typing, therefore you should not go out of your way to seek the entity itself through the use of aggravating it. Instead, you should go in and use the Spirit Box and EMF Detector to find the Entity’s Room and then record the evidence necessary for your Journal.
