How to Sit Out in Fortnite

Nothing wrong with taking a little break.

Grouping up with your buddies for a few rousing rounds of Fortnite is a great way to spend an evening. When you’re playing a bunch of matches back-to-back, though, it can get a bit exhausting.

If you need to take a break to get some food, rest your eyes, or answer nature’s call, you don’t need to break up the Squad. Just sit out for a while. Here’s how to sit out in Fortnite.

If you’re in the lobby alongside your Squad before a Fortnite match starts, but decide you need to take a breather, you can do so very easily. Just follow these steps:

  • Press the ESC key on your keyboard or the pause button on your controller to bring up your Social menu
  • Click the little cog symbol to bring up your Social settings
  • You should see a button marked “Sit Out.” Click it, and you’ll be switched to “Sitting Out” status.

While you’re Sitting Out, you’ll still technically be part of your Squad, but you won’t join the game as a player (though you can spectate if you want). Whenever you’re ready to play again, just click the Sit Out button in your settings again in the lobby, and you’ll be live again.

Sitting Out is a much more efficient way to take a break than just leaving the Squad since you’d have to rejoin them once you want to play again. Just make sure your Squad is okay with you taking up a slot while you Sit Out; if you’re playing with random players, they might not appreciate you taking up the space if you aren’t actively playing.

Can you hang out in Fortnite?

As fun as Fortnite is, it can be a bit draining to be constantly playing Battle Royales. If you need some lower-key entertainment, you can hang out in the Hub areas for some basic chatting, or join a Creative world for more open-ended, user-created fun. Fortnite isn’t just about the Battle Royale anymore; it’s a whole platform to meet friends and have some fun!
