As a result, the game relies heavily on nest layout, army size and composition since you’ll need to built up an army capable of outmassing rival colonies and overwhelming enemy creatures. Like tiger beetles, mole crickets, mantids and whip spiders.
Campaign
Empires of the Undergrowth has a main campaign or story mode that features documentary-style scenarios. Which are narrated from the perspective of a documentary film maker studying ants. Each scenario is presented in a certain tier, which allows you to play as a specific species of ant. Including;
- Black Ants
- Fire Ants (coming July 27th, 2022)
- Leafcutter Ants
- Wood Ants
Each type of ant has a different style of play and advantages in the game. Every tier you will begin with just a queen ant and a few workers, however, the end goal is always the same; build up your ant colony to withstand all that nature has to offer.
Not only is it a scientifically accurate game to play but it’s also incredibly fun as well. Every type of ant reflects the environment you would typically find them in and the game beautifully illustrates the everyday struggles these tiny insects have to endure.
Freeplay
Once you’ve mastered the campaign mode, you can then begin what is called Freeplay. Which offers a more expansive experience providing a range of extra levels and unique objectives.
Currently, Empires of the Undergrowth is an early access game and has been since 2017, which means that it’s still under development and is subject to change in the future. At the time of writing, the game costs $9.99 on Steam, Epic Games and GOG.
