How to Get Fortnite on iPhone

How to Get Fortnite on iPhone

Here's how to get Fortnite on an iPhone so you can play the game without going through the official App Store.

If you’ve been living under a rock for the last couple of years, first of all, I envy you. Secondly, you might not have noticed that Epic Games and Apple got into a huge legal punch up that began in August of 2020 and lasted for a year and changed over the way Apple runs its App Store and manages payment systems. Even after that whole kerfuffle came to an end, Epic and Apple are still on pretty bad terms, which is why Epic has been banned from the iOS App Store. Even so, people understandably still want to play on the devices they have, so here’s how to get Fortnite on iPhone.

So, if you want to get technical about it, while Epic has been banned from the iOS App Store, Fortnite has not, though it has been delisted. You can still play Fortnite on an iPhone or iPad, but the problem is that, since Epic has been barred from the App Store, they can’t send out any new updates for the game. This means that the iOS version of Fortnite is permanently stuck at version 13.40, which is miles behind the current version 20.00 build. That’s over six versions of patches and content updates, so while you can play the game on an iPhone, it’s hardly the definitive version.

Unfortunately, until Epic and Apple bury the hatchet, assuming they ever do, there is no officially supported way to play Fortnite on an iPhone. That said, there is one potential workaround for this, though it’s not exactly ideal: cloud streaming.

Nvidia’s GeForce Now cloud streaming service is currently in a closed beta, but if you could get past the waitlist, you could stream the properly-updated version of the game to an iOS device.

Here’s how to play Fortnite through GeForce Now:

  1. Go to the GeForce Now website through your phone’s web browser
  2. Make a GeForce Now account and sign up for the waitlist
  3. If you get approved, go to the site again and open the GeForce Now web app
  4. Sync your GeForce Now account with your Epic Games account, and you can start streaming Fortnite

Of course, there are a few problems with this: you have to actually get into the beta, you can only play as long as the beta is running, and you’d have to play the game through a web browser like Safari. This means that how well the game runs is entirely dependent on your internet connection and the health of the servers, though reports have said that GeForce Now actually runs pretty well for a cloud streaming service, and you can still use touch controls. It’s not ideal, obviously, but it’s the best you’re gonna get right now.
