How to Get a Pet in Sea of Thieves

While a stereotypical pirate often has a parrot on their shoulder, naval historians have had a difficult time determining whether or not that’s based on truth. Long John Silver of Treasure Island was the first fictional character to popularize the notion, though according to some aficionados of the Golden Age of Piracy in the 1600s, pirates would often keep rare birds snagged from trading vessels as trophy pets. However, no official records of pirates with parrots on their shoulders have been uncovered. Well, even if it’s only in the realm of fiction, it’s still a tradition worth upholding. Here’s how to get a pet in Sea of Thieves.

If you want a pet, the first and foremost way of getting one is, unfortunately, to shell out for it. Pets are available in the game’s microtransaction shop, the Pirate Emporium. Pets can be purchased with Ancient Coins for prices ranging from 499 to 649. Ancient Coins are primarily obtained by purchasing them with real-life money, though if you’re lucky, you can also source a few from the rare Ancient Skeletons that occasionally spawn on islands. Occasionally, the Emporium will feature special Collector’s Pets, usually along with major in-game events. Collector’s Pets have cool visual effects like spooky fire or unusual colorations. Or they could just be skeletons!

In addition to pets, you can also buy Pet Outfits from the Emporium for 249 Ancient Coins a pop. Much like pets themselves, Pet Outfits don’t serve any practical purpose, they’re just there to make your pets look cute and snappy. Just a heads up, though, Pet Outfits cannot be worn by Collector’s Pets.

When you purchase a pet, visit the Pet Chest near the Emporium to equip it. It’ll appear nearby and begin following you around. Don’t worry; pets can’t die or get lost. If it gets separated from you, it’ll just reappear by your side.
