How to Fix Sprint and Melee Problems in Dead Space

So, in the remake of Dead Space, some players are reporting issues when they try to sprint and/or use melee attacks. And, by issues, I mean they can’t do either. I admit, this can be incredibly frustrating, but the good news is that there’s something you can do to prevent this from happening. Though, this fix is only applicable to those playing the PC version of the game, who are using a mouse and keyboard.

It would seem that, when booting up the game on PC, there’s a so-called ‘imaginary controller’ that is paired with the game automatically. So, with certain commands, the game is trying to refer to this pretend controller rather than the mouse and keyboard. It’s not entirely clear why this is how the game was designed — to this writer, it sounds like they made it more complicated than it needed to be.

But, there is — thankfully — a simple means of correcting this problem. If you find yourself unable to sprint or use melee attacks, give these steps a try:

  • Go into the PAUSE MENU and navigate to the CONTROLLER LAYOUT options.
  • Press CUSTOMIZE, and go down the list of pre-established mapping options and hit CLEAR for each.
  • Be sure to SAVE the game before returning to the game. If all went as it should’ve, then you should now have no trouble sprinting or using melee attacks with the mouse and keyboard.
