How to Claim and Upgrade the Lightning Staff on Origins in Zombies Chronicles

There's only one way to obtain and upgrade this deadly weapon!

Zombies Chronicles is the fifth DLC map pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops III that features a total of eight different zombie maps from previous titles. Such as Call of Duty: World at War, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Of all the iconic maps included in Zombies Chronicles, Origins reigns supreme. Particularly since it’s home to four powerful Elemental Staffs, one of which is the lightning staff.

How to Claim and Upgrade the Lightning Staff on Origins in Zombies Chronicles

The lightning staff is one of four buildable elemental staffs in Origins. It shoots out bolts of lightning when fired that can chain and kill multiple zombies at once, much like the Wunderwaffe DG-2. It can also be upgraded to the Kimat’s Bite, which allows you to chain and kill more zombies at a time as well as provide a deadly melee attack. The upgraded version also features a secondary attachment called Sekhmet’s Vigor, which causes the player to flip the staff and use the bottom end.

To get the lightning staff, you will need to obtain three parts of the staff, the elemental crystal, the gramophone, and the correct records to access the Crazy Place as well as the lower levels of the Excavation Site. Here are the locations for each;

  • The three staff parts can be found in areas only accessible by jumping off the tank at certain locations. The first part can be found on the way from the church to the tank station by the wooden cutoff staircase before the trench to Generator 2. The second part can be found on the way from the tank station to the church in a small hole passed the cutoff wooden scaffolding linked to the Excavation Site. The final part is on the upper level of the church, to get there you will need to follow the dirt path before the church.
  • The purple record can be found near Generator 4 as it will spawn inside the tunnel near the gateway to Crazy Place. The gramophone always spawns on the floor inside of the Excavation Site, while the record to access the lower levels can be found outside of the Excavation Site.
  • The elemental gem can be found inside the Crazy Place but you’ll need the purple record and the gramophone to access it. The entrance to the Lightning tunnel is near Generator 5. Once you’re in the Crazy Place, there will be a pedestal that will open up with a purple glow with the elemental gem inside.

Once you’ve collected all of the parts for the ice staff, you can then build it on the lowest level of the Excavation Site, in the purple pedestal. Once built, it can be picked up by and player and upgraded to improve performance. The lightning staff upgrade (Kimat’s Bite) can be built if you;

  1. Solve the riddle located in the Lightning part of the Crazy Place. It will be near the portal on the wall and will feature purple triangular shapes, representing a keyboard. On the opposite walls, there are notes of chords that must be played using the staff. There are three chords and each chord has three notes to play. Being that the chords are never randomized, the following combinations will solve the puzzle every time; 136, 357, 246.
  2. Once you’ve solved the riddle, there will be another in the original realm. Here you will find eight panels that the player can interact with around the map (one of which is completed automatically). Players will need to turn the knobs on the panels in the correct position in order to solve the puzzle. Keep in mind that the panels will spark with electricity until they are turned in the correct position, which can be done at any point in the game. Here are the locations and positions for each panel;
    • The first panel is located right next to Generator 5 (needs to be pointing down).
    • The second is in the basement of the church next to the torch with the number 3 (needs to point to the right).
    • The third is up the stairs inside of the church next to the repairable window (needs to be pointing up).
    • The fourth is to the right of the entrance to the Wind tunnel (needs to be pointing up).
    • The fifth is at the bottom of the stairs in the Spawn room (needs to be pointing left).
    • The sixth is to the left of the back door of the tank station (needs to be pointing down).
    • The seventh is next to the path towards the church behind the Excavation Site (needs to be pointing up).
  3. After successfully completing this riddle, an audio cue will play and a beam of light will shoot up from the Excavation Site. Here, players will have to order the floating rings inside the lower levels so that the lights on the four rings are purple. You can rotate the rings by pulling the levers located around the lower levels. Once all four rings are purple, the purple orb inside must be shot with the staff. At which point it will glow purple and shoot up in the air.
  4. Finally, you will need to place the staff inside the purple pedestal in the Crazy Place and kill around 25 zombies to collect their souls into the staff. Afterward, Samantha may talk to you about the “power of lightning being available”, and the staff icon on the HUD should now have a red outline. This indicates that Kimat’s Bite can now be picked up from the pedestal.
