How to Avoid the Monster in Amnesia: The Bunker

Be careful where you tread

Exploring the Bunker in all its contents can be incredibly tough, what with having the most persistent creature in gaming history on you the entire time. With ways to lure the Beast, tricking it or hiding just in time to avoid its gaze, it is down to the player to stay ahead of the Beast’s moves. Even the safe spot of the Administrator’s Office can pose a threat once the Beast boars a hole into the room’s wall. Nowhere is safe inside the Bunker so you will need to bring your A game if you want to get out of there alive. If you are looking for ways to avoid the Monster in Amnesia: The Bunker, then this guide has all the tips and tricks for you.

Tips on How to Avoid the Monster in Amnesia: The Bunker

Plan Your Route to Lead the Beast to a Dead-end

Sometimes the best way of to avoid the Monster in Amnesia: The Bunker is to simply never run into him. You should refer to the sounds of his growls in the wall and the footsteps along the ceiling for his presence being close. We highly recommend that if you are planning to visit a particular spot in the Bunker, that you first visit the furthest away area possible and make noise to lure him over. For example, if you want to go into the Communications Room for the Arsenal Code, you should head to Maintenance and make enough noise to bring him towards you. You can either jump around or keep winding your flashlight to bring the Beast to your spot. Make sure that if you are attempting this, that you are close enough to the area’s entrance to then run back through into the Central Bunker.

When you are back to the Central Bunker after running or walking, you should begin to crouch in the new area, just so that you are not leading the Beast directly back to you in the new area. Some areas of the map are known to have more aggressive plays made by the Beast, such as the Soldiers Quarters or Arsenal Storage Areas. You may find that in these areas, the best thing to do is to turn your Gamma up and crouch walk. This is especially the case for those playing on Hard Mode.

Lure the Beast Into a Trap

Next, you will find that there are randomly placed booby-traps around the maps. Whilst these can be destroyed using the Bolt Cutters, you may find that traps laid in the narrow corridors are best left alone. Our reasoning for this is that if the Beast is alerted to your presence, you should run and jump over the booby-trap wire so that it sets off on the Beast. You can also use Gas Tanks or Explosive Barrels as a way of leading the Beast directly into the trap. In these cases, you will want to block any holes that the Beast can come through. Whilst the Beast will have a harder time breaking through, he can still enter the area via the hole that you blocked up. But by placing an explosive container, you will hurt the Beast, resulting in him running away immediately.

Learn the Layout for Hiding Spots

Whilst Amnesia: The Bunker does not force players into hiding, unlike other games in the series, it would help you to learn of the hiding spots in the game. Luckily, you can hide pretty much anywhere, so long as he does not have LOS on you from the doorway in the room you are hiding in. Players can hide in closets (without shelves), under tables or tucked away in corners and behind barrels. You should never rely on a singular barrel in a room as the Beast can see you. But if there are multiple stacked in a bundle or a line, these should provide you with enough cover to not be spotted.

For a guide on the best hiding spots in Amnesia: The Bunker, this is what we recommend:

  • Officer Quarters – Strategic Operations Room (under table).
  • Maintenance – Foreman’s Quarters Room, Clerk’s Office or inside Break Room (requires Wrench to open), Closet located at dead-end opposite Foreman’s Quarters..
  • Storage Hub – Chapel (behind the altar table), Pillbox (requires key).
  • Arsenal – Under table in Storage Area B.
  • Prison – Inside Warden’s Office (requires Wrench).
  • Soldier Quarters – Under table in Utility Room and Dark Room.
  • Central Bunker – Administrator’s Office.

Avoid Making Unnecessary Noise

The most natural way to avoid the Monster in Amnesia: The Bunker is to completely avoid making noise. Ways of doing so is to use the Lighter and Torches for methods of lighting your surroundings. Whilst you can flick on every switch you come across, you will find that this drains your Generator Fuel, therefore it is best to avoid doing this altogether. However, noise will always attract the Beast to your movement. Of course, if you are playing on Normal or Hard, you will want to avoid running all together unless you are trying to return to the Administrator’s Office knowing fair well that you are close enough to make the trip. But in most cases, walking can alert the Beast. This is due to where you are stepping however. You should keep your eyes on the ground to see if there such as rubble, broken glass and wood that make noise when you step on it. This can be found in all areas and should be avoided at all costs.

When dealing with Rats, these can house their own problems as a lot of ways with dealing with them are loud, especially at the beginning of your playthrough. If you do not have the resources to get past Rats, such as the ones blocking the Maintenance entrance, it may be better to take the damage of their bites and heal up rather than using the Frag or Gas Grenade (without a Gas Mask).

Try to Find Your Way Around Difficult Situations

If the route ahead of you seems loud and impossible to complete silently, it likely is. When this is the case, you should know that there is always a quieter way forward. If you find that there are Rats blocking your path or a door locked from the inside, look around the rooms nearby for possible vent covers that you can remove by using the Wrench. Other times, such as navigating through Arsenal Storage can make it look like you must bypass the Rats whilst dealing with the highly aggressive Beast. In this instance you can actually get past the Rats without having to deal with them. The same can often be done with Rat packs inside corridors and rooms.

The only instances in which you will not be able to be quiet is when you need to unlock doors that are locked on the inside. A prime example being the Security Room in Soldiers Quarters. Unfortunetly, there are no ways of smashing these doors quietly. So when the time comes that you need to take these out, be it with the Shotgun, Cinder Block or Frag Grenade, immediately run to safety where you can find under tables or in closets, waiting in the darkness until the Beast leaves. Pay attention to the flickering lights as these tell you when the Beast is in the area and roaming around. When he lets out a large cry and the lights return to normal, that is both your visual and audio cue that it is safe to leave.

Know What to Bring With You

Depending on where you are going, you will need to sort out your Inventory before you leave. Like mentioned above, there are areas where the Beast is much more active. These are in the Soldiers Quarters and Arsenal Storage. Some areas have more Rats than others, these are Maintenance and Soldiers Quarters. Others have more booby-traps, these are Maintenance and Arsenal Storage. Knowing what is in store and what gameplay is required of you per area will help you determine what is needed. You can pick up Pocket Bags along the way which will extend your Inventory Slots.

Every time you enter a new area you should at least stock up on Fuel Containers, Bandages and Medkits located near the entrance so that you can quickly head back to the Administrator’s Office and drop off your loot. When you are making moves on getting the Arsenal Code, Dynamite and Detonator, you should opt for an Inventory that helps these different environments and gameplay. This however is only necessary if you have opened most of the Lockers in the Mission Storage. You can complete the game with the Winding Flashlight and Pocket Watch, if you play super carefully and stock up on Meds.

  • Maintenance – Gas Grenades (requires Gas Mask) or Lighter for Torches (to clear Rats). Alternatively you can use Meat or Flares for Rats. Bolt Cutters for booby-traps and shortcut between Maintenance and Storage Hub.
  • Arsenal – Lighter and Torches over Winding Flashlight for visibility and quietness.
  • Roman Tunnels – Frag Grenades and Shotgun for Beaufoy.
  • Prison – Shotgun or Frag Grenades for doors, Wrench to get Bolt Cutters.
  • Soldiers Quarters – Revolver, Flares or Gas Grenades (Gas Mask required).
