How Passive Abilities Work in Midnight Suns

Free cards, extra damage, more health, the list goes on forever!

Midnight Suns‘ intricate gameplay mechanics can get quite confusing. However, one part of the game that is a bit easier to understand is the system of passive abilities. A mainstay in many tactical RPGs, passive abilities are active throughout every mission and can provide a multitude of bonuses. From granting resistances to generating heroism at the start of every round, players will want to inspect every passive ability to find the best ones. We’re going to suit up and take a look at how passive abilities work in Midnight Suns.

There are various passive abilities for each character, providing tons of options and choices for the player to choose from. Passive abilities aren’t actually tied to just the characters, they’re tied to certain skins and collars as well.

Starting with the characters, each hero (minus the Hunter) comes with a unique passive ability. This ability can then be automatically upgraded based on your friendship level with the character. For skins with certain passive abilities, players just need to equip them to their respective heroes in order for the passive ability to be active. Interestingly though, let’s say you have a passive ability from a Spider-Man suit that would work great with your Blade deck build. Players have the option to decouple the ability from the suit. This feature further expands the never-ending list of different combinations you can do in this game.

How do Collars work in Midnight Suns

Passive abilities connected to collars seem to blend the passive abilities with your active ones. These abilities will reward the player if they play certain cards. A player might get a refund on the next Hunter card if 3 light cards have been played. Some collars allow you to draw extra cards if other types of cards are played. This is where the passive ability system really gets to shine and show you just how deep this games mechanics can be.

While some passive abilities might not be as useful as others, the amount of customization that is given to the player is truly wonderful. It can be easy for the many mechanics in the game to overwhelm you with how in-depth they can go. Simply knowing how passive abilities work in Midnight Suns is only half the battle. I encourage every player to go out there, mix and match different suit passives with collar passives, and see just how much destruction you can do.
